Steering wheel size

68 911.
330 or 350 mm.
What's best I know small looks better but ?

You need to consider that a smaller size will limit your visibility of the instruments - that is why you see many people rotating their speedometer

Mahler9th 04-01-2021 08:56 AM

Personal taste. Smaller diameter means greater force required.

It would be interesting to know who decided that "small looks better". I think just the opposite.

I went from 350mm to 400 mm and couldn't be happier.
Much better view of the instruments, slightly less effort required for parking lot (slow) maneuvers and a much more relaxed feeling on the highway.

Weren't the original wood rimmed wheels on the earliest 911s quite large in diameter?

RetroSC 04-01-2021 12:58 PM

330 is way to small. Top ring will be right in middle of gauges, useless. I've ran several and keep coming back to the 380 size, just right if you ask me. I only slightly preferred my 360 Prototipo for autox, but again just slightly, and for road driving 380 every time.

Gianni at Pelican Parts 04-01-2021 02:28 PM

I went with a 360mm Autodromo MPI wheel on my 84 E30 and it's perfect sized, turn-in feels great and turning lock to lock is easy.

I fall into the bigger is better category too. I like the classic look of a bigger steering wheel, and I like the more relaxed feel. I took off my Prototipo (360) because it interfered with the gauges. Much happier with a thinner, larger diameter wheel.

You should use whatever you like better in your car. The steering wheel is the main way we interact with our cars.

I love the look and feel of my 370mm. I had a 350 on my prior '89 and on this '71 but they tend to obscure critical gauges during routine driving. The 370s do not.

smaller (not too small) and thicker look better, feel better, turn quicker and more precise (for me)

where would one get a 370 mm wheel like that? i know that there are vintage ones but they are far and few and pricey.

Mine is a 1981 date stamped Prototipo. I found it on eBay a few years back. I just had to wait for the right car to put it on.

You can also hawk the Pelican used part forum, but they’re hot right now, so they tend to sell quickly.

Lyndon302 04-06-2021 04:18 PM

I have got a Nardi in 350mm. Swede
I'm sure it will be good.
Lyndon

ChrisHoover 04-07-2021 08:43 AM

I replaced the smaller Nardi wheel with a larger reproduction wheel

Peabo 04-07-2021 09:08 AM

I too went with a 400mm. Very happy but I know the 350 is popular - but wrong :)

Tommy Z 05-06-2021 12:32 PM

I just purchased and then returned a MOMO Heritage Indy 350MM. It was just felt ridiculously un-substantial. I currently have an aftermarket Dino wheel on my car that also obscures the gauges and probably is no bigger than a 360 at best but it's just beefier. I realize now that if I'm going to purchase another wheel it will be no less than a 370MM but wooden ones in that size are $$$ and very hard to find.

patipatina 05-06-2021 11:30 PM

Well, I can tell you from my experience of 20+ yrs of steering wheel collecting and driving, racing, restoring vintage sports cars, most of them were 911s. Due to the lower weight on the front end, a 350mm wheel will do it BUT a lot of folks that are looking for wheels contact me and ask for 370mm steering wheels. I always have 2-3 wheels in the car and on long tours that I do in my favourite 911, I change wheels from time to time. But, if we're speaking about ONE FITS ALL, I would do bigger than 350, my favourites in those sizes are either the Momo Rally 2000 (which is a semi-dish) suede 360mm wheel or a 370mm Prototipo or Abarth. Here's a nice little article about it.

And if you're interested in the Momo Prototipo history, you might wanna read this here as well!

Quasimoto 05-09-2021 03:14 AM

Everything is wrong about my Momo Model 08...too small 350mm...too much dish, 88mm. But I like it because it has a different look.

I don’t think Momo offer enough combinations with respect to diameter and dish. If they ever offered this wheel in a 370mm with a little less dish, I’d buy another... :)

I got a 350 mm swede wheel. Nardi.
Perfect. I have original seats. I'm sure people confuse the wheel size with seat bolster.
Lyndon

patipatina 05-10-2021 12:44 AM

And swede (poor swedes) and suede

What is the stock steering wheel size?

FWIW, i've got exactly that. Even though abarths are 'easier' finds in 370mm, i picked up a momo wheel with tapered slots in 370mm too. If interested to know more, best way is to reach out to me on instagram https://www.instagram.com/_more_momo/
Or, if time is of no importance, you can send me a DM here.

I've got one exactly like it that i would sell. Expecting a silver spoke flat version as well in 370mm.

cassisrot 05-11-2021 05:43 PM

I like my 350mm 930 style. Looks great, steers great and isn’t that hard to maneuver. I should point out that I’m 77 so if it was hard to steer I’d for sure notice. The original wheel in my Carrera was just flat ugly.

Optimusglen 05-12-2021 05:34 AM

380mm feels so nice

Thread resurrection. Have a 1980 911 SC with an aftermarket steering wheel. It measures 14" on the OD. That converts to 355mm if math is correct. It blocks most of the speedometer. I'm 6'0. Steering effort is fine and I realize I could install the speedo on it's side, but haven't found the answer. What diameter would a stock steering wheel from a 911 SC be? This thread seems to indicate 370mm works. Thank you. Mark

That’s 355 mm.

MarkWard 06-08-2022 11:28 AM

Thanks typo. Still would like to know the stock diameter.

Cairo94507 06-09-2022 04:52 AM

I have the 370mm Prototipo, that I had Dallas Customs pad, wrap and stitch in black, on my '71 914-6 and it feels terrific to me.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1654779154.jpg

MarkWard 06-09-2022 06:29 AM

Cairo, thank you for taking the time to post a picture. Looks very nice. Decided to post a picture of my wheel for comparison and may have stumbled on part of the problem. Depending on camera height of my phone, I got different views. I held the camera to mimic my view and sure enough part of the problem might be my height and seat position. I recall the 914 you sit pretty much on the floor. In the 911, seat is low, but I don't believe as low as the 914. Could be wrong.

Pegasus Auto Racing has a 380mm OMP wheel that might work better than the 370 Momo wheel Pelican lists. Would still be nice to know the stock steering wheel diameter. I asked our Pelican rep and he wasn't sure. Thanks again. Mark

I also have the 930 wheel!! I love it. Looks great. Thick. Leather is perfect. You can see all gauges! I hate the 4 spoke Camry wheel that came with the car. Even an MG has a nice wheel. First thing I bought and changed when I bought my car 12 years ago. But was $500 with everything.

Cairo94507 06-10-2022 05:13 AM

@MarkWard - You are quite welcome sir. Thank you. Yes, in the 914 the seat is low. :)

The 37cm Indy is back, but only in black rim... which is good for me since I have a vintage mahogany 3rd-gen. 37cm Indy from 2-79, with a Porsche custom leather button.

I recognise that one 😊

Fwiw, I'd say yours is actually more like a second gen indy, if we're going forth on the logo on the front.
