70 T Trany Help
Help Pelicans.
My old T with the push me/pull you clutch cable bit the dust recently. The plastic actuator on the throw out arm broke and I had to jam it into 4th and 5th to get off the freeway. Anyway, I replaced the plastic actuator and got the clutch working but now I can't keep it in 4th or 5th gears. I adjusted the linkage and I'm afraid I screwed up something inside the trany. Any ideas as to what I did. I can get it into 4-5 gears but it pops out when I try to accelerate. I'm prepared to pull the trany but just want to seek some guidance and counsel. Thanks, Dirty Marty Fallbrook, Ca. |

See if the coupler bushings are still intact first.

Thanks John,
The coupler bushing's intact and the shift linkage is and feel is about the same as before the part broke. I can find all the gears as I said, but when I load the transmission in 4th or 5th it pops out of gear when I try to reengage I get a terrible grinding as well. What usually goes in this situation the bearings, synchro, or? Dirty Marty |

I am not an expert, but it sounds to me like you may have moved the shift fork by forcing it into gear. If it has moved along the rod, you cannot fully engage the gear / dog teeth, so it will feel like it went into gear, but isn't fully seated. It will pop out under load and grind if you try to put it into gear under load because it cannot fully engage the synchro to get the gears to mesh.
I just had this happen to me. The transmission had to come out, and it could be as simple as moving the fork(s) back to their correct positions. For me, it's turning into a rebuild as there were broken dog teeth and a worn synchro. You may have moved 2 forks since 5th and 4th are not shared in either the the 915 or the 901 transmission I believe. In this video you can see the bronze colored shift fork I am talking about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yuy1cmQB7lc Good luck. Last edited by thetorch; 04-05-2021 at 06:26 AM.. Usually it's because the little "dog teeth" on the part that keeps the syncro in place have broken off, allowing the syncro ring to expand and then the shift sleeve doesn't have much to hold onto and pops off the dog tooth ring. The shift fork could be bent or broken also. Sounds like a tearsown is in order.
Drain the fluid and see if there are any teeth on the drain plug magnet.

PS. As others have noted, bending a shift fork would have the same effect as moving them.

Thanks gentlemen. I was planning on a freshening up of the drive train . Evidently, it'd taken on a new urgency.
