Question on steering rack.
I took my steering rack off and played with it a bit last night. Coming into pellican and see people rack has some bushings/spacers on each side but mine doesn't. Is it because they are diff year, or mine is simply missing something?

You are good...the pic you reference shows a problem the guy is working with. His rack had a seal let go and the inner elements are coming out that side.
Your rack looks fine and you do have those parts but they are behind the inner seal at both ends.

Thanks Reiver,
How about the way the sharp tilted? Is it ok or does it have to be perpendicular to the rack?

Probably they all eventually look like that....mine works too well for me to take it out for a rebuild even after 255k miles. Tight as a drum.

now, I am back to clueless. I am trying to trace a creaking noise on turn. After taking everything apart, a-arms looks good, ball joins look good, aluminum cross member look good, now steering rack look good. What else... sigh.
Thanks Receiver

![]() The weight of the SHAFT and age of the rubber cause it to deform, as long as the inner parts are not torn or damaged you are good. The Squeek could be from lack of lube

Try a shot of ATF in the ball joint boot. 10 cc or so.

On the rack, should I add grease or ATF inside the rack?

There are also a pair of bushing's you can add to the turbo tie rods called the "Tire Rub Prevention Kit " Elephant Racing |
Tire Rub Prevention Kit | Porsche 911/912/930 But not what you are referring to, I guess. That rubber connector is like a guibo / flex joint I think. You might want to just change the orientation of it 180 degrees. Pelican might sell new ones. Replace it if it has cracks etc.

I took the shaft/rod and bushing off. Bushing looks good, but one thing i didn't expect is the shaft/rod. The images of the shaft below are at the collar where the needle bushing should be
To me, there is no way this rod can be crack/broken with our hand force. I don't feel like it is a cast mark, especially at this location. Can it be a defective item? If it's yours, would you put it back in or get a new one? Thanks. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

That looks bad, at the very least questionable. Just put a new one in to be safe. This is not an area where metal fatigue will be your friend.

If you were an AXer or Track Guy, I would say replace it. But I think you are fine.
Just make sure you place bearing grease there and the needles. That area sit on the needle bearing covered by the rubber donut type bushing, it is meant to be flexible or you will feel every vibration on the road. Mine also looked horrible but I do not recall it having a mark like yours. Maybe one of the master wrenchs can chime in???

it doesn't look like it's was welded together (after it broke). So Porsche technician would install a steering component like this? Or maybe termites

Buy a used shaft for $25-50, unless the only driving you're doing is in and out of the garage. A failure of your ability to control the direction of the vehicle is an absolute catastrophe anywhere else.

Looked at it personally today. It appears to be surface only deterioration. I think he will be okay but it is not my car. It will not interfere with the needle bearing since it is radial.
I think he will replace it to be safe. ![]()

Like you said probably no issue but that is just not a place to accept 'probably'...same as in the brake system. 100% or better in control/braking
