I’m taking my wheels to Al Reed’s for refinishing and I was wondering if anyone knows what the original “look” is for these wheels?
They are the early deep lipped 901.361.012.06 wheels and the black painted area on the spare is different from the other four. As you can see on the spare wheel, the black paint comes out farther on the lip than the others. I’m assuming these were refinished at some point as the black doesn’t come out at far as the spare. (sorry about the crappy pic) I just want to make sure they get refinished to stock appearance. My second question is; should a ’70 911t have aluminum brake calipers? The research I’ve done says no but they are definitely aluminum. Thanks for any info, Charles |

Is your car a T?
If a magnet doesn't stick to your front calipers you've got S calipers. I have that exact setup, a 73 T with S calipers. I think that was a factory option. sorry can't help you with the wheel question

The wheels on my '73 E looked the same before refinishing. I had assumed it was because the paint had worn off the road wheels over the years, but the spare stayed clean.

correct wheel finish
Rob is right, your spare has the correct early finish. I couldn't find the post from Mark Powell, he just got his redone correctly, just as your spare. If anyone knows the correct finish, it is Al Reed. Sounds to me like you have S caliper too, lucky you.
Shawn.

The S calipers are yellowish/gold in color and the mounting holes are 3.5 inches apart as opposed to 3 inch spacing on the steel calipers.

ya really can make a mistake...the S cals are BIG... and magnets will not stick. Can't say about the color. Had mine glass beaded when I rebuilt them and they are ..silver ...like aluminum should be.

Somebody make a note of this important day - I'm actually helping with a technical question!
Here is a photo of the early correct finish and the link to the thread. Early deep Fuchs, traditional finish - photos Happy to help...
