Another drool - how much is this 917?

Any of our San Diego friends care to wander in to Symbolic Motors and find out how much they are asking for this winner of the 1971 12 Hours of Sebring?

Thanks

Wasn't that the car listed on eBay or somewhere recently? $3.5 million?

Why don't we all chip in $5.00 and buy this one.

Isn't that Bobby Rahal's car we saw at Classic Le Mans 2002?

Bob Goding: I agree those replica 917's are very very cool. Much cooler than the GT40 replicas out there. Now if I could only get together a bit more than $100k to get one, haha...unfortunately I don't think I see that happening anytime soon

After watching "LeMans" on DVD (at work!) I have a newfound appreciation of the 917. I'm in for $20.

That car sold (or at least was for sale) when I was at the '99 Monterey Sportscar Auction at Fisherman's Warf. But I can't remember the price. Is it possible to look up previous auctions on line somewhere?

Okay, I'm going to say this again, because I am still reeling from the epiphany. 917 was the droolcar of my youth (and many of you as well). Until last year, I thought these cars were large cars. At first glance, especially with the long tails, and the driver hidden behind glass, they look like large cars. Now I know that just the opposite is true. The only things about this car that are large are the engine, the performance and the trophies. A 914 TOWERS over one of these tiny things.

Yeah, I've seen a picture of the Penske crew swapping engines on one of their turbo 917's and it looks like they have a WWII airplane engine on the hoist. They were certainly not a compact engine!

Tom, do you remember which auction company did the auction? They usually list prior sales on their web sites.

It was RM but it looks like their website's auction results may not go past 2002. Unless there is an archive I did not see.

Super, you are right about the size of these cars. It is also interesting to see how soft the springs are and how much roll they have when in action compared to a modern racecar. Same with with a 935.

This car was sold by RM for $990,000. I don't think that includes the buyers premium. Here are 2 interesting comments made by Sportscar Market mag. at the time.

"Probably the 1971 Sebring-winning car driven by Vic Elford and Gerard Larrousse. In clean as-raced condition with its Sebring winning Martini graphics and a fresh 5-liter 917 engine. Once had its chassis plate swapped with a Le Mans-winner"

"Whether this 917 won Le Mans or Sebring, it would make a great centerpiece for a collection of racing Porsches. The 917 experts in the crowd thought that $1 million for this car was cheap, and the low price was a direct result of its uncertainty"

This car has bounced between the Symbolic and 962.com site for a bit now. Last time there was a price attached to the listing it said $2,250,000 USD

Regards,
Andrew M
