It is sometimes this color when floating on water though.

Some gas is dyed to show it is one type or not. Aviation gas is usually blue when sumped from the tanks before flights to check for water. It is a pale blue however. I think if it is contaminated with Jet-A it turns a brighter blue as a warning. It turns green with water contamination.

Diesel fuel designated for off road use is usually dyed red or blue, but is that still considered petrol ?

I always figured it was from a spill in water, like manbridge said. I'm thinking something like this likely has 'petrol blue' shades in it somewhere... though, based on that logic, it could have just as easily been petrol orange

From Wiktionary:
"The term may originally have pertained to petrol-derived compounds such as paraffin, which is often coloured blue."

Great color!
I have a very early 78 that is believed to be one of the first (876) Petrol blue cars around.. Porsche couldn't find the code for CoA, although the paint tag is still on the car with the code.
