The CSF Cooling 911 Backdate - Road to SEMA 2021*
We've been teasing it on our social media, but CSF is excited to now officially announce our new project car for 2021, to debut at SEMA in November – the #CSF911
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...f3357a2548.jpg The Project In an effort to showcase CSF’s expanding range of Porsche air-cooled oil coolers + continuing our deep passion for Porsche project cars, the owner of CSF has decided to throw his hat in the ring for the best Porsche build of the year. Coming off his 1,000whp 1/2 mile 991 Turbo S, and his RUF conversion 996 RTurbo, Ravi Dolwani, owner of CSF, has decided to go back through the pages of Porsche history with this unique 911 backdate – 73 RSR style with a modern twist. Major Partners SV Auto/Simo Veharanta – svauto.com Expert Porsche builder, often found in the pages of Excellence magazine and a pedigree stemming from his deep connection with good friend Alof Ruf from Germany. Jon Sibal – jobsibal.com Famous automotive designer responsible for designing many award-winning vehicles throughout the world. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...793d362ffc.jpg Simo from SV Auto doing a "Zoom" design meeting with Jon Sibal Supporting Partners KW Suspension Rywire.com Stoptech Racing Tarrett Engineering ERP Sparco Chasing Js Streetfighter LA Rogelio’s Upholstery Michelin Tires Rotiform Wheels BMRS Plumbing Kinsler Fuel Injection Sachs Performance WebCams Prato Motorwerks And lastly but not least, SSF European Auto Parts Distribution Company, who has come on board to help with product support and sourcing all of the parts needed for this Porsche restoration project during the challenges of the pandemic that we’re all going through. The Plan Simo decided to take on building the CSF911 under one condition–the design process would be a mutual collaboration between himself and owner of CSF, with the ultimate goal of building the most fascinating Porsche 911 backdate ever to be created. A perfect blend of classic style, inspired by early 1970s RSR race cars of the past, mixed with materials, technology, and innovation from 2021. The beginning of this journey started on Janaury 1st, 2021 with the enlistment of famous automotive designer Jon Sibal, brought on as the critical third partner to kick off the design–now being used as the roadmap by SV Auto to bring this vision to reality. On January 4th, the team at SV Auto started from scratch and began tearing down a 1982 911SC to bare metal. No details will be overlooked, no corners will be cut. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...e8869f2b89.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...d95b9b247f.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...2f0727cabf.jpg We’ll be diving into the details of the 3.9-liter, naturally aspirated, 400+ horsepower custom-built engine and drivetrain sourced from SSF’s complete catalog of Porsche OEM and high-performance parts. We are using parts from the top manufacturers in the world including pistons from Mahle Motorsports, a modified G50 transmission from Patrick Motorsportswith a shortened bellhousing to fit the G-body Porsche 911, a high-performance Sachs Motorsports Clutch, and all the way up into the cabin with a CAE Billet Shifter, just received from the UK. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...32eb4a349b.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...815eef04f3.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...7af3b86a4b.jpg |
Should be an awesome build, looking forward to seeing it take shape.

Second Week of January
First things first – we had to make a chassis jig to move the car around the shop and also to transport to the body shop. This jig was built in-house by Tito, in-house fabricator for SV Auto. Really nicely done with great welding and high-quality casters. https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...8440862939.jpg Fourth Week of January Originally, the design plan for the car was to import the first 4Laws full carbon fiber shell into the U.S. I saw the kit on display for the first time at Toyko Auto Salon back in January 2020. We explored this option along with both Simo from SV Auto and Jon Sibal for about three weeks, with many hours invested along with the companies new U.S. distributor and 4Laws from Japan. https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...8440901393.jpghttps://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...8440894165.jpghttps://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...8440887799.jpg After meeting with their distributor in person, and understanding more about the actual body kit as well as considering lead times and possible issues of delivery because of the pandemic, we graciously opted out of this concept and decided to pursue something drastically different that has never been done before. https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...440876786.jpeg Full design booklets professionally printed on high-quality paper/ink, including clay models as well as full-color digital renderings by Jon Sibal. |
After changing directions from the 4Laws Kit, we decided to make an all-metal wide body RSR style backdate. No fiberglass at all, complete with an aluminum hood, hand-formed steel fenders, and a custom 1 of 1 hand-formed duckbill and decklid.
https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...217988972.jpeg Custom steel rear bumper. Because of this, we transitioned from the red ’79 SC you saw in our original post, to this ’82 SC which had already had its fenders and quarter panels complete. https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...534-scaled.jpg https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...536-scaled.jpg https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...9217978875.jpg https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...217997230.jpeg Aluminum hood, no fiberglass. We have a very special gas tank and cap design, which we’ll be sharing with you soon. https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...9218031764.png 80 lbs. of hardware for the vehicle, ready to go. https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...9218040933.jpg All the exterior trim, sandblasted and ready for coating. To stay true of the ethos of the car, using modern technology and modern materials, we decided to finish the trim in a very unique cerakote finish. https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...9218047428.jpg |
Some updates from over the weekend, continuing with our theme of using modern technology and materials.
Check out these anodized pieces that we just got back. This finish is “titanium anodized” and its a custom finish that we are having made for us locally. https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...9481336589.jpg https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...9481327383.jpg These are 6 Piston StopTech Billet Calipers, part of their “Level 3 Street Kit.” You can read more on them here: https://motoiq.com/stoptech-brake-options-for-early-porsche-911/ https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...9481305713.jpg Billet valve covers from Tarett Engineering, back from getting anodized. https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...9481312753.jpg Close-up of the differences between two of the different finishes and processes that we have as part of the design of the car. The cerakote door handle vs. the anodized valve cover. |
WOW!!!! Subscribed. Can't wait to see the engine. Can you tell us where this is happening? I didn't read the entire thread.

We just got our exhaust headers back from Hytech. This brand may not be as well known as others, but rest assured these are the absolute best headers you can buy for 911s. These headers make the most power and we’re excited to have these as part of our engine package. |
Are those bulges anti-reversion chambers?
|
Yes they are. John makes REALLY nice headers that make power. My motor was the mock-up motor for his air cooled headers and he also makes them for GT3s.
His GT3 setup was worth 10hp+ over the factory M&M RSR headers on PMNA’s engine dyno in back to back testing when I used to be involved with such things on a customers Grand Am spec 4.0L 997 engine. Steve Wong can tell you what they are worth HP wise on a stock 3.2L. |
Oh yes he does! :)
Why are the anti-reversion chambers sitting so close to the valve? The anti-reversion chambers are an old "trick" in the V8 community. There, however, they always place them after the collectors. Took me a while before I found out why collectors are't that big of a deal among Porsche people!? :) (that an ignition sequence of 120deg does't help that much in terms of scavenge effect) Maybe that's why they're located there? I made step headers for a WV, a long time ago, and the first "step" sat approximately where these A-Rs are located, So maybe it's to capture a certain puls ( number 2?)... It's actually interesting what "Steve Wong can tell you" for the effect of the A-Rs increasing along with the amount of valve overlap. |

https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...731-scaled.jpg Custom titanium interior parts going through first prototype phase. There is a complete set of pedals as well as different style floor boards – the one on the left is the more traditional circle dimple style, the one on the right is the one that will be going with our own horizontal pill shaped design, which we think is much better suited to the shapes of a 911. These are being made custom for our project by good friend and titanium experts, Chasing J’s Automotive, located in Orange County, California. These are just prototypes in a raw finish – you’ll have to wait ’til the final reveal to see the titanium color grade and what the final design looks like when installed in the car. |
Good lord ... you had me @ titanium !!
Cheers Steve |

Inside look of the best-in-class Wavetrac differential that is going into the transmission. We’ve used Wavetrac on several previous builds and they really are amazing. https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...0776691300.png Patrick Motorsports billet side cover for the shortened bellhousing G50 transmission to fit into our 911. How it started: https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...0776422452.jpg https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...776438455.jpeg Behind-the-scenes of the transmission getting put together. https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...776451770.jpeg Fully built transmission, waiting to get assembled on the engine which we just got back yesterday. https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...0776428712.jpg https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...0776412329.jpg Built by Prato Motorwerks. Kinsler Fuel Injection Kit is 2-3 weeks away from being finished, then we can put everything together and start on the custom Milspec wiring harness with Rywire Motorsports Electronics. |
https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...383128529.jpeg
https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...383122260.jpeg More stuff off to coating to get cerakoted – We’ve actually taken apart a Momo Prototypo Steering Wheel to have the spokes coated to match the rest of the trim + we will be wrapping it in a custom leather finish to match the interior. https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...383134580.jpeg Also we just started on the custom roll bar that is being welded in-house by SV Auto. |
We've made some more progress on the roll bar, but we still have a lot more to do. We can't wait to show you all the technical details of our design.
We've also started to fit and trim the StreetFighter LA fiberglass panels for the interior of the car. https://streetfighterla.com/ https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...896988451.jpeg https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...896980414.jpeg https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...896998111.jpeg Rotors and finished calipers are back from StopTech – fully assembled along with a hand-painted logo. https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...896969974.jpeg |
What are you using for the black coating on the exterior of the gearbox and engine case. It's looks very nice. Thx
|
We’re using the previous ’79 chassis we had to mock-up the interior panels and roll bar. We’ve made more progress on the interior:
https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...2140861645.jpg https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...2140854674.jpg Got our stripped steering wheel back from getting the cerakote finish – now its off to Carbone Liveries in Poland to get wrapped, along with a couple other goodies. https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...2140848240.jpg Also got this picture from Kinsler. The ITB setup is almost complete – waiting for the drive-by wire (DBW) motors to be installed next. https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...2140840385.jpg |

Things are taking shape. :)
Months of meticulous body work has been completed by Perry’s Custom Metal including the custom front bumper, rear bumper, decklid, and duckbill. The team at SV Auto just finished up incorporating the one-of-a-kind 959 gas cap location into the aluminum hood. https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...4055187355.jpg https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...4055195484.jpg https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...055201575.jpeg Custom roll bar is almost done – includes a removable harness bar that can be quickly installed if the need for a harness arises. Dash is coming together and we’ve got mock-ups ready for the pedals/floorboards from Chasing Js. https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...055213227.jpeg https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...4055207641.jpg Our drive-by wire ITB setup from Kinsler also just came in the mail. Ready for Rywire Motorsports Electronics to wire it up. https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...4055219573.jpg https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...4055227409.jpg |
Personally, That harness cross bar looks too low. Will it pass a 20 deg harness angle test? Should be horizontal through seat harness holes (or tops of shoulders).
Great details in the build. The DBW throttles are cool. But have a certain visual heft to them. curious how you sync L/R bank. On the drive motor or through SW (ECU)? Is that a duel fuel rail for return aesthetics or dual injectors? |
Quote:
The dual rails are actually not dual rails at all. 1 rail is for fuel delivery and the other is a vacuum manifold plenum giving the tuner the ability to run a “manifold” density sensor (aka map sensor). We'll be posting up more pictures tomorrow - we got a lot of progress to share! |
Maybe the best 911 build ever? Love what you guys are doing.
Rywire and Hytech some nice names in this build. Great job Ravi!! |
Speaking of updates, when will Pelican get deliveries of your 8110 oil coolers? My order has been backdated for over six weeks now, when can I expect to have it?

Last week was a big week, as we were able to start putting together our engine and transmission along with the new Kinsler ITB setup.
https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...5270273184.jpg We’re using a Porsche 996 GT3 plenum. We’ve modified it to fit a full Wiggins clamp assembly – shaving down all the unnecessary bosses and shortening the runners by 17mm each to accommodate the Wiggins weld ferrules. If you know anything about Wiggins clamps, you probably have only seen them in their signature purple finish – we were able to work with our plumbing and hose supplier, BMRS, who is a distributor of Wiggins, to get our clamps custom finished in black. After the fabrication of the plenum, we’ve sent it out to first get polished and will be then sending it out to get cerakoted in our signature steel finish. https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...5270283765.jpg Full Kinsler assembly laid out. https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...5270319627.jpg Transmission, engine, and ITB setup all installed and ready for Rywire to come in and start mocking up the wiring harness for the Motec M130 drive-by wire setup. The engine case, transmission, and underside of the car have all been finished in factory slate grey. https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...5270292269.jpg Close-up of the custom intake plenum over the Kinsler ITBs. https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...5270301240.jpg https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...5270311961.jpg Foam cutout representing CSF’s new ’73 RSR front bumper oil cooler that Wie’ll be receiving the first prototypes of next week. https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...5270340719.jpg More updates coming next week on the interior – Stay tuned and have a great Fourth of July! |

Some updates on the interior.
We’ve worked with Rogelio's Auto Upholstery in Baldwin Park on our builds before, so it was a no-brainer to bring them on board for our 911. We first enlisted the help of Steady Garage to create a rendering using our Sparco SPX seats, which we then used to bring our vision to life. https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...5872385932.jpg Below are the materials we’ll be using for the upholstery – grey alcantara, grey leather, and Goyard bags that we will be pulling apart for the center portion of the seats. https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...5872365141.jpg https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...5872372933.jpg https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...5872378488.jpg |
A lot of fab work going down as we start to move towards assembly.
Another modern piece custom fitted for our car – this time a 991 GT3 titanium exhaust modified to fit our custom-made rear bumper. https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...978495425.jpeg https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...978450222.jpeg Welded in-house by the team at SV Auto. https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...978482661.jpeg The custom roll bar we’ve shared before is now in its final stages. https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...978470704.jpeg We also got centerlock adapters made by Stanceworks Garage in Costa Mesa, CA – they’ll be used on our custom Rotiform wheels. https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...chedImage.jpeg Ryan from Rywire Motorsports Electronics on his second visit to SV Auto, mocking up fitment to make sure everything fits perfectly for our drive-by wire setup. https://csfrace.com/wp-content/uploa...978503871.jpeg |
This build is becoming legendary. This may end up becoming one of the top builds of the year!
Keep it up! |
