How to restore a gas cap?

I am dropping some parts off for cad plating and decided to explore how to take my gas cap to bits. This is as far as I have gotten.

Beware the spring loaded plastic bar will jump out and attack you! The black plastic insert in the base of the treaded portion seems like a light press fit, I have not been able to remove it yet. I would prefer to get the plastic out prior to plating, has anyone.done this before?

I'm not positive about cad plating, but with yellow zinc you can leave plastic and rubber parts attached. The process has no effect on them.

I may do that, it's the same basic process. It looks like the edge if the lower part is roll crimped in on the plastic.
