Possibly raw gas in exhaust but how to know
1981 911SC after engine partial rebuild, engine starts easily and runs well but looks like thin smoke from exhaust and gets thicker as it runs, but smells strongly of raw gas. The mechanic who did the work has retired and not available. No other local service available. As engine is running smoothly, where could raw gas be coming from ? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi peetie,
You may have two separate problems. The thicker smoke could be oil burning off of the heat exchangers depending on how many miles since rebuild. For the gas smell, I would first stick my finger in the exhaust pipe and see if I could smell raw gas on my finger. If not I would try to find a leak by tracingthe fuel lines. A good steam clean top to bottom is also a good idea to help search for leaks. Best of luck, Rahl

If you're running rich enough to have raw gas in the exhaust, you'd have a terrible stumble in the engine. Pull the plugs and look at them.

How long are you letting it run?

When I purchased my Turbo it was running good but extremely rich. The main indicator of this was backfire from the muffler on most full throttle up-shifts.
