Modern Entertainment for the 911
Hey guys-Happy Friday!
Just wondering if folks could share what they have done to modernize their car's entertainment systems. I am not looking to keep things classic (old syle head unit etc). I don't want to cut extra holes and add massive amps and 4 gauge wiring either. I am more looking for a head unit that does Bluetooth, etc to modernize the system. I also plan on updating the speakers without changing mounts or cut-outs. I have an 88 Coupe if that helps... Let me know what you have done, what you like, tips tricks and such that you might share. Thanks! Last edited by thsupernge; 05-21-2021 at 08:21 AM.. Reason: add info |

Hi thsupernge- The SQR46 DAB string might be helpful, however, you would still retain the classic look. (not sure if that's important based on your post)

there are some good threads out there on speakers/mounts, etc. search the forum for "focal" and "morel" for some examples. I'm a big fan of the 911-specific rennline iPhone mount, think great sound can be had with a combo of door speakers and an underseat subwoofer (powered by an external amp) --

I installed a sony Mex#### i dont remember the model # it does 2 bluetooth connections the LEDs are programmable colors so you can match the intensity and color of dash lights. Not too much bling, used Focal speakers in front work nice
Rear speakers need spacers or aftermarket covers if using coax. |

Most modern stereos use independent grounds for the speakers so new wires need to be run.

Certainly - I have removed the radio + loadspeakers from my 911 You drive one of the best sounding cars, and then you want music ! |

speakers, have heard good things about focals and morels for our cars -- My setup's currently VERY minimalistic -- use my iPhone as the source, feeding a bluetooth>RCA interlace that's wired into an old 2 channel a/d/s amp under my passenger seat. Next steps include 1) adding a powered sub under passenger seat - focal IBUS 20 or 2.1 look interesting, 2) replacing my dead in-dash radio with the Blaupunkt Bremen referenced above (probably stick with the a/d/s amp, as it sounds nice, 3) properly mounting my door speakers (probably start with my speakers and potentially upgrade later?) to the metal door panels (there are threads about how to do this with a cutting board - I have some plastic cutouts I bought from a (now defunct?) vendor that used to be on this forum - and deadening the doors with dynamat/etc.

My approach is a bit different.
Some time ago I replaced the original head unit with a CDR-220, also replacing the door and rear deck speakers but keeping the stock-style speaker grills. I then sold the CDR-220 and reinstalled the original Blaupunkt SQR26 because I wanted the original look, someone wanted to buy the CDR-220, and because the original unit sounds pretty darn good. My logic is that my '87 Carrera will never have the "concert hall" sound of my much newer daily driver (which has 450w, 12 speakers, logic 7 surround sound, etc.) and I would have to add lots of acoustic insulation if I was to try. To adapt the original head unit to "modern audio", I got both wired and Bluetooth cassette adapters (Sony CPA-9 & Ion Cassette Bluetooth Adapter) so I can interface with my iPhone. For the iPhone, I made a removable adapter that tightly fits into the ash tray and provide a location for a "vent" type phone holder. ![]() And yes, that is Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" playing on the iPhone. After all, Blaupunkt translates to "blue dot" and the previous posts displayed "turn blue". Last edited by dw1; 05-23-2021 at 12:38 PM.. |

Speakers have come a long way in the past 20-30 years. A set of good quality modern speakers and a head unit to power them (or an amp) will sound much improved. Add to that your choice of wired or wireless connectivity and you can maintain OEM looks with modern features and sound you can hear clearly at freeway speeds and above.

I have installed this VDO/Continental in my 85 Carrera 3.2 and am very happy with it.
https://www.ecstuning.com/b-vdo-parts/radio-orange-display-usb-mp3-wma-12v-vdo/tr7412ub-or~con/?gclid=CjwKCAjw-qeFBhAsEiwA2G7Nl92b2fwTQWqibVRfuGmQGs2r1zS2zRkfhKU 1xsp80o0gIKW9EOKQYRoCi_QQAvD_BwE Its not fancy, but it does have bluetooth that works well, and hands free also. I upgraded the speakers under the 80s alpine speaker grilles in my car. Just to some regular quality ones and the stereo is good, but not amazing. A sub under the seat would help. Cheers Stewart

In addition to the VDO/Continental, the Clarion M508 is a nice option.
