Help Identify Engine Rattle/Grind??
Hi,
Totally rebuilt engine, followed Waynes' book to the letter. After initial 20 minute warm up, I was dialing in the idle, and noticed I am hearing a rattle/grind maybe... I disconnected the fan to try to hear it better and I went around with a stethoscope to the valve covers and timing chain case, and various other places and still could not pin point the location of the noise. Yes I noticed too once the fan was off that there is a bit of smoke so I also have to locate the source of that, but that is not the topic for this post. Would love to know if any of you hear anything you can identify in the video below. Thanks, Marc

Check all your external fasteners. When I dropped my engine to work on the trailing arm bushings, I took the opportunity to put in new semi solid transmission and motor mounts. Had quite a bit of odd rattling that I attributed to the new mounts. The reality was my swaybar mounts were loose. It was a bit bound during install and apparently not fully tightened. Once I figured that out, the car sounded much better. I would go back thru everything and just verify nothing is loose, including the exhaust (also loosened up or wasn't tightened).
