Brought my fan housing to a gun shop!

Local gun shop does cerakote so I popped in to ask if they only do guns. I bring in my fan housing and ask if they can coat it. Guy says "yeah we can do that". They even have pretty glitter guns fer the ladies! I'll post a pic of the housing when it's completed.

Smart thinking, lots of unrelated businesses that do similar things that might work good on a car too.

Question: what color glitter did you get on your gun! Kidding of course.

I asked them about a pink gun for my daughter. Yeah she wants a pink one and they mentioned their "glitter guns". If you do a search for glitter guns you'll find the gun shop I brought the fan housing to. They apparently have a patent pending and they're selling the crazy things all over the country. They do some sweet coatings on guns.

BTW, not affiliated and not trying to generate sales for them. Had no idea if they'd coat my fan housing or not. Just thought others might have a local option.

Found a plating place local to me and brought the fan hub, pulley, nut, spacer and fan housing strap to for yellow chromate coating. RIDICULOUS cheap! $25-$30 to strip and coat all those pieces. I'm gonna drop him a few dollars extra. I removed the hub myself.

This thing should look SWEET when it's done.

So...what did they coat it with? Lots of firearms finishes it seems, at least more than in the old days.

OOPS! Guess I didn't mention that it is cerakote. Fan and housing are getting cerakote. Fan hub, pulley, nut, spacer and fan housing strap are at another local shop getting yellow chromate.

Seems like a lot of gun shops do cerakote. I did a search for cerakote near me and up popped a bunch of results most being gun shops.

What are you using to re-attach the fan hub to the fan? The OEM rivets are evidently not easy/impossible to find.

I'm going to go with something like this. I'll post the size when I find one that works. I've found several threads where guys used something like this.

I was gonna go with aluminum rivets but I don't have the tool to round the end and figured stainless bolts would work. Since I'm doing a black shroud with a gray aluminum finish on the fan I figure I'm not "factory correct" anyhow so why not go with stainless bolts and nuts?

I did too.
I had the rivets and pressed them in, though I just couldn't achieve to make all of them seat perfectly. at the end 3 hat some very minimal play.
I gave up, drilled them out and bolted it up.
I've seen quite some professionals in the game do it that way as well.

I did some searching and saw where Mark and I think Ben both used bolts and their work looks REALLY good so I figured, good enough for them, good enough for me!

Dp,

Where did you get those rivets? Any part number or description for these rivets? Lastly, what special tool/s needed to install them properly? Any advice is highly appreciated. Thanks.

From another thread relating to the rivets:
The rivets you would need to reattach the hub to the fan would require a bucking bar and an air hammer to do it correctly. Look up Aviation rivets and bucking bars.

I got the rivets from McMaster they’re not a perfect fit but close and there’s two options buy oversized and throw them in the lathe ( a pain and time consuming) or go to the hardware store and buy some tiny aluminum tubing in the aisle with all the small brass, copper plates and tubings and cut sleeves that go over the rivet shaft I believe it’s like 3/16’s. Makes for a good fit.
For setting them an air chisel/ hammer. You can drill or mill a dome into one of the air chisel tools ( the most useless one) to make the tool or make one on the lathe or buy one for like $15. The stock rivets are an odd size I think 2.5 ish and I think they wanted like $200 for a box from Europe. McMaster was $6 for 100. They look perfectly stock installed.

I coated a glock pink for my wife. Seemed dumb to me but she wanted a pink gun. Made her more enthusiastic to go out and shoot with me so it ended up being a good idea.

I'm having a 3.6 built for my car and I want to do a cerakote on fan & housing. The alternator fan tends to be a pretty high wear item, and most other coatings tend to not stand up. Any word on how cerakote stands up to the test of time & use compared to everything else?

I recently had my fan and housing cerakoted too.. haven't fitted it yet, but the quality of the coating seems pretty durable.
