modifying console for much easier install/removal

I have a 86 3.2 Targa, and removing the center console is a real pita. When there is factory AC it's even more complicated. Getting all the controls, switches and cable booms in and out is a nightmare. First time I did this it took me the best part of a day to remove and install back in. And my hands had scratches all over.

Cause all was out again for replacing carpets, I thought this was the time to fix this. It actually worked out great, with this (easy) mod I don't need more than 15 minutes to get the console out and back in.

This is the console I am talking about

Removing it is a lot of work, once here it's easier.

Removing the plastic frames is a matter of some screws

one of the problems is that all cable booms go upwards through a horizontal opening and then flat to the back again. The cables obstruct everything and are the cause of the fiddling.

comes in the saw to cut off the whole back.

Now we take a look at the back of the console frame (back cover off). The passage for the wiring looms and AC is limited in size

So, I simply made it (much) bigger

Now we return to the frame, and install the switches and the leads.

The empty console chassis is put back loosely on the tunnel. The AC switches are simply pushed through the (now hughe) open rear.

The frame is now pushed in, it became a piece of a cake to install the AC switches. The frame is fixed into the chassis with 1 OEM top screw each side. Putting two extra self tapping screws at the bottom (about where the central locking is) fixes everything firmly

It does not take more than a couple of minutes to go through the steps in the last 4 pictures. And no scratches on my hand!

When the back cover is slipped over, nothing of all this mods is visible. And I have a lot of peace of mind in case I need to remove it all again, and I will cause I will upgrade the AC ;-)

Nice write up, and very good looking carpet too!

Excellent project and write-up! Thanks! This is a real improvement with no particular 'downside.'

By the way, I love your square weave carpet.

Thank you for the tip. I agree about the console being a PIA to take out & put back in. Will do this mod next time I get in there.
