Pertronix ignitor question....

Ok.... Everone tells me to hook up my red wire from the pertronix

ignitor to the number 2 fuse left of the engine compartment

because it has constant power.... I could not unscrew the thing

because it is siezed... so I connected it to the number 1 fuse...

the number 1 fuse has constant power even when the car is

off... Is this good or bad...?

marcesq 05-04-2003 12:14 AM

Bad, I wouldn't give power to anything full time but the radio and the clock.

I don't think that the CD unit (whatever makes the spark signal on the Pertronix) should have power full time. It would be like have the Permatune box on all the time which it is not designed for.

Sorry for the typos it is too early in the morning for my fingers. :)

Why is it bad?

DMX 05-04-2003 12:30 AM

Ok... I just went into my garage and hooked it back up to the coil like I

had it before....

Hey DMX

You mean to tell me that you hook up your Pertronix to the coil and it starts? All the expert here said that it needs to be connected to the number two fuse in the engine compartment.

When I had a 74 911 I replaced the point with the Pertronix and it wouldn't start so I put back in the point.

DMX. I just completed the install of a Pertronix on my 74 today. Worked perfect first time. Email me if you need details. I also took a bunch of pics. poorsha@shaw.ca

you should be able to loosen one of the screws on the #2 fuse block? you dont want power on the circuit all of the time as it may keep car running. i posted the other day on how i wired mine up 2 weeks ago. it works great, tach and everything with an msd 6al.

It works... But it did not work with the original coil like the instructions said... I went and bought a super coil and the thing fired right up... It works all the time since....

if you connect your petronix red wire to the coil+ and the black wire to the coil- you are not triggering your CD box you are triggering the coil.

do this experiment:

disconnect your CD box, attach 12v to the coil+ and hook up the petronix as I stated above. It'll run. It's "inductive" ignition. Thats how I have it insatlled on my 67 Mustang.

What you want to do is connect your petronix red wire to any SWITCHED 12v power supply and connect the black wire to the wire your points used to attach to.

you will notice a great improvement in low end and power if it is connected properly.

You really noticed an improvement in performance you can feel in the seat of your points...er, pants with the ignitor instead of points? I can handle working on points no problem, can clean them or replace with a spare I keep in the car's toolbox, but I have considered and wondered about the ignitor.
