Preventing nuts from coming loose

Which do you think does the best job of keeping nuts from loosening?

Nylon Insert nut;
Split Lock Washer;
Wavy Washer
Outside Star Lockwasher
Inside Star Lockwasher
Regular nut with Locktite?

In some ways it depends upon the application ie where it is to be used? There are also other versions of your list above.

Junkers test is the vibration test used to compare various locking methods. In heavy rail, we use Nord-Locks almost exclusively.

I agree that nord lock is very effective. At Chrysler we allow nylon lock nuts to be reused 5 times and mechanical lock nuts to be reused three times (don't ask how we keep track)

Inside Star Lockwasher

Tighten the nut then damage the threads. It may loosen but not fall off.

Alternatively, after tightening, put a weld on it

Cool stuff. Will Nord-Lock work on bolts that join items with a gasketed seal between them, or does it require that the bolt be under continuous significant tension?

You didn't describe your fastener application. Is it a CV joint or a valve cover? A seat belt bolt or a nut that holds your radio in position? Is it a con rod nut or a muffler nut?

If it's a typical Nylok type nut and washer to hold engine covers on, I'd consider sourcing them from another supplier.

If you can't describe the application, go to a factory repair manual and look up what's specified.

Porsche Crest

I just use Blue 242 Loctite. Simple and effective for my needs.

Thread locker. Not suggested, does not work in every application.
Safety wire. Not suggested, does not work in every application.

Suggesting these as an overall threaded fastener answer is inaccurate, over-reaching and borderline OCD (as if OCD is a solution). Techies probably understand. Newbies might take those words as gospel.

Of course nothing works in every situation. I just can't seem to keep these jello nuts from loosening in above freezing temps.

I studied Nord-Lock's web site content, and I plan to replace the washers on my '72E's suspension and drivetrain with these.

In some critical applications (e.g., eng & tranny brackets, trailing-arm-to-spring plate attachment, etc.) Porsche used specially-designed washers with ribbed sides (somewhat similar concept to Nord-Lock, except in one piece.) These (still available) may be a cheaper alternative to Nord-Lock.

Thanks for the video to Nord Lock.
I'm convinced.
