Undercoating and galvanizing
1976 was the first year for galvanizing. Did galvanizing end the process of undercoating? I am assuming undercoating added weight and galvanizing helped in this regard.
With my 76 Carrera, I don't see any sign of undercoating and I know that Porsche was interested in reducing weight like they did for instance using light weight but durable carpeting.

No. Undercoating continues to this day as a standard application.
It is deletable or not applied on some models, usually as a no cost option. Usually seen on RS or Clubsport models, but occasionally others. Motorsport vehicles are generally delivered without undercoat. It usually weighs anywhere from 40-60 lbs depending on the model. Modern cars are far more stingy with undercoat in an effort to save weight. Last edited by FrenchToast; 05-27-2021 at 08:37 AM.. |
