Tires for ‘85 911

Time to replace the Goodyear Eagle GT ll’s that I’ve been running. Looking for suggestions on replacements. Vehicle is regularly driven, relatively spiritedly. Looking for something with a comfortable ride that can handle a bit of abuse. Rarely rains, never snows, don’t suspect I’ll need anything M+S rated.

I like the Continental ExtremeContact Sports. They are on my 1973 911 and use them for street driving, HPDE and rain/cold weather tires at Autocross. Quiet, predicable, well behaved.

RE71Rs still around. Killer tires. I just purchased a set and got a $70 rebate. $690 mounted and balanced through Discount Tire.

I also have a 85 911. It came with 15 inch Fuchs. It is pretty much impossible to find a good tire for a 911 in the appropriate sizes for a 15 inch 7 & 8s widths. Minivan M&S tires will work, but they suck in performance.

I finally gave up, and stored the 15s up in my attic. I bought some 17 inch Euromiester wheels. Perfect fit, and now I run Michelin Super Sports. 225-45 Front and 255-40 rear. They are great tires. My speedometer is dead on accurate.

jljames65 -- welcome! Few questions that will help us with advice

1) what size tires/wheels are your currently using? '85s came with either 15 or 16" rims, depending upon how optioned?

2) where do you live/plan to drive? Rain and snow are two considerations, third is winter temp? all seasons may make sense if you'll regularly drive in cooler (40ish degrees f) conditions, as summer tires can "complain" in these conditions?

Another vote for these. They do everything pretty well, look great on the car, and they're pretty damn inexpensive.

Very pleased with the set of YOKOHAMA ADVAN A052 I recently put on my 84 Targa.(205/55R-16 & 225/50R-16) Super grip and surprisingly quiet.

Suggest you check out the reviews!

JT

Michelin Pilot Sports

If you have 16” rims and don’t need the widest tire for the track, I am very happy with my new Michelin Pilot Sport summer ZR rated, stock sizes 205/55 F and 225/50 R. The ride, handling, and braking is great.

I restored some old turbo 7”/8” x 16” rims and the stock sizes from Costco (with $150 Michelin rebate) ended up mounted/balanced for less than $600, including taxes.

These are one of the few performance tires also available for 15" rims (205/50-15 front and 225/50-15 rear)

I’m yet another very pleased Conti driver.

I'm on my second set of these in 225/45 and 245/45 on my 16" 8's & 9's. I don't think there is a better option for summer street tires.

I like the Conti DWS06 for a daily driver or as a second set for cold weather use, but you'll seriously give up grip in fair weather.

205/55r16 front

I think this is what I need for my 1980 911SC, I am having difficulty finding this size for R15's. Discount Tire and NTB said they can't find anything for 205/55 front and 225/50 rear.

Bruce -- do you have 15" rims? There are a bunch of options available for 205/55-16 and 225/50-16 -- tirerack.com has a handy tool for seeing what's available in this combo. MUCH less so for 15" sizes, but the A052 option looks to be great for a high performance summer-only tire

I was looking at the Conti ExtremeContact DWS 06 Plus.
The come in the 225/50 and 205 55 16" that I need.
Better for driving in cold weather.
Anyone tried them out?

Yes, my customers love them, I put them on both of our Cayennes and bought a front pair for my Carrera to get home from Colorado when I had a little too much fun last year.

The Cayenne feels great in inclement weather, but it's a Cayenne.

I can say with confidence that new DWS06 has less dry grip than bald R888Rs as the car just pushed going through a round-about.
