Best Satin black for wheels and trim?

I need to redo the black centers on my fuchs and possibly the trim where it is wearing off on the car. What has been found to work out well? I seen to remember one product, Wurth? And is that in Satin Black?

I've used all sorts of Satin paint on Fuchs over the years.

Wurth Satin is IMO the best, the easiest to use (flows the best), matches the factory look the closest (although some others are close, too), and lasts the longest. It is a very high quality paint, worth the extra $5-$10 it will cost you, IMO.

I painted my Fuchs centers about a year ago. I read tons of posts on it and found many different opinions on paint, but I decided to go with the Wurth Satin Black.

Here's an example of a freshly painted wheel using Wurth:

I've used all, I found Satin Black VHT polyurethane wheel paint best , as far true to colour and paint strength.

Did you bake it after it dried? When testing the product I've found it marks easily but there are many fans of this product. I admit that I never baked it so this might make all the difference.

I have used plain old Rustoleum satin black on several of my trim pieces. I swear, you can not distinguish it from any oem colors. I would recommend a trip to Lowes or Home Depot and investing in a $5 can, then make your own decision.

Also, I would recommend purchasing thin blue vinyl trim tape from 3M. It makes it very easy to lay down a clean perimeter line. Masking tape is more difficult to create the edge. My tape is about 1/4" wide. I read about it in someone's post, make it a lot easier.

+1 on that.
I first used the 1/4" and then the 3/4" blue vinyl tape to mask the wheel perimeters.
After that I used a combination of masking tape and paper. But the flexible blue tape made my life a lot easier.

Prep by buffing with steel wool. I used small balls of the stuff to plug the lug holes to keep paint out of that area. I used Rustoleum 7777 - several thin coats - and three years later with daily use and pacific northwest rain and muck and they still look great. Go for it!

It's a shame 7777 is not available in Australia, otherwise I would have bought some long ago.

I wrapped 5 lug nuts with aluminum foil and placed them over the lug holes.
(Not my idea - got that tip from one of the forums - worked great.)

Managed to sneak this in last night while the wife wasn't looking (hence the dodgey phone camera pic)!

Baking has made a huge difference to the hardness of the finish. If you buy a rattle can that suggests baking it to fully cure then I would suggest you do it.

BTW this is VHT Engine Enamel. I was going to send them off for 2K paint but wanted to test this product first (I only painted the rear of the wheel so far). A rattle can appeals to me because it can be touched up easily plus I have found the VHT so easy to use. Getting an even, satin finish from 2K in my backyard was not in my skillset. I know VHT has a Wheel Paint (which I have tried) but I like the idea of a tougher paint which the Engine Enamel is.

As a rattle can paint I know that with no hardener certain chemicals can ruin it, but my 911 is not a DD and the wheels will only be washed by me with warm water and a dash of light detergent.

I use Eastwood Satin Black Wheel Paint #10085Z.. As far as baking, I leave them in the SC sun for a couple days.. That'll about bake anything..

Does anyone have an idea of how much paint it takes to paint all four wheels?

Has anyone ever considered the two-part coatings used in firearm finishes?
DuraCoat:
DuraCoat Firearm Finishes

Cerakote:
Cerakote Coatings

I am using DuraCoat to restore an old Marklin HO scale model locomotive. So far it appears to be as advertised.

This might be a good product for such applications as wheels. Not to mention other things.

PPG Black epoxy primer... DP90LF. It's a very nice satin, and it will not wear off. But you need to mix it and run it through a sprayer - and wear a mask!
