Cost To Fix Broken Head Studs? (Studs Only No Rebuild)
I was in the process of replacing my old heat exchangers with SSI's and came across a couple broken head studs. I'm wondering what I should expect cost-wise if I take it in to my local Porsche garage (not dealership) and have them remove the broken studs. I am not in the market for a rebuild at this time. That will take too long and I want the car back soon to use for the summer (maybe a rebuild over the winter). I don't have the time, tools, etc. to get in there and do it myself, so any expectation on what people think is an appropriate cost just to get the studs taken care of right now is appreciated.

40 hours times whatever hourly rate you want. And cost of studs ($500), plus gaskets, and lubrication. So, $1000 for parts and 40 hours. You might be able to cheat and remove the heads, cams, and tower all in one shot. That would save some money.

heads and cylinders have to come off so... there is your rebuild.
if you only have one stud off for each set of 4 i would leave it , drive it for the summer and have them repaired over the winter and have any valve/ ring work done at that time. You have to tear the whole top down to do studs and that is the time to do valves/rings. |
If the head studs aren't on the same cylinder just drive it and get it fixed in the fall/winter.

What engine would help. Info is everything. I do a whole valve grind for 40 hours labor on most of them, including lower steel studs, so quotes will vary.

It would be a shame to pull it to bits without doing a few things like John said, a valve grind and maybe new valve seals.

There's a lot of info missing from the OP to say that they should do a valve grind and valve stem seals. I took my engine apart due to broken head studs, inspected everything, found it to be in good shape, put new head studs in and put the engine back together.
"While I'm in there" will eat up that green stuff in your wallet fast and many here are more than anxious to help folks spend their money. Evaluate based on mileage and condition and go forward from there. What I'm sayin is, if it ain't broke don't fix it. |

Which engine? If a 2.7L it often times is a very slippery slope.
