What is option code M190? "Increased side door strength"?

My '84 Carrera Turbo Look has option code M190: "increased side door strength". What exactly is this? Is there possibly a metal bar behind the door skin? Can it be easily removed for weight savings ? Weight?

84 would have been a euro car. I know all US cars after 73 required a door crash bars. Its possible there was no requirement in Europe and it was an option for Euro cars?

According to my VIN I have a US car and as you say should have the side bars standard. So is M190 additional strengthening?
Still would like to know if bars can be easily removed and about how much do they weigh?

‘84 Turbo would be a Euro car not Turbo look which was made in U.S. spec.

An 84 Turbo would not be a US car.

I agree with all of you about the Turbo, but as stated in my original post, I have a 1984 Turbo LOOK. It's a US model, per the VIN, so it should already have the side bars standard. So does option M190 add additional strengthening?

Just spitballing here, but maybe because it’s a turbo-look, and uses a turbo body, the builds normally used row turbo doors without crash bars. But for US market cars they had to add them, and thus the option code.

No, they aren’t easily removed.

You should look in the 914World website. There is discussion on removal of the door reinforcing bars. Very similar to 911 doors.

Are the turbo doors different in shape? Never heard of a turbo door before

Just because there is an option doesn’t mean the car didn’t hand to have it. Plenty of option codes are mandatory for specific markets. Eg hydraulic bumper shocks on all us g-body cars, which could be ordered for extra in RoW cars. It’s an option to the base car build, not to the showroom spec.
