Spare Tire

On a whim, I removed the spare from the trunk of my 88 911. It was obvious it had never been mounted or used. It's 33 years old and I wanted to see if it would hold air, so I pumped it up to 40 psi, left it overnight and went back to check this morning. Still at 40 psi. It deflated nicely back into its original shape and went easily back into place. Remains to be seen whether it will hold up when pressed into service, but encouraging so far.

not bad. i have one, never used as well, which does the same thing at 54 years old.
probably just as trustworthy as yours.

If I don't want to trust that old of a tire and the car doesn't have the air compressor what are people using for a spare ?

Buy a small compressor & a quart size can of tire soup. Just like the new hi-dollar cars with no spare. Also will need a valve stem remover by the side of the road. Test run the compressor to verify the power plug fits your cigar lighter.

Changing the tire in normal cars is pretty easy. For a 911, where will you put the dirty, flat tire you remove? If you have no luggage with you, you might get it in the trunk, but that depends on how big your tire is. What if your rear tire has the flat. My rear tire is a 255/40-17 and I am not sure it would even fit in the trunk if I had no luggage with me. On any road trip the my 911 is pack to the gills with luggage.

If you have a flat on the rear, the manual says to put the front tire on the rear, and use the spare only on the front, so two tire changes. I have been lucky on my many road trips and never had a flat. I do carry tire plugs, a can of fix a flat and an air compressor.

All of this came out of my 911 on one trip.

I just had the fortunate experience of using my 45yo spare tire. Similar to others, it doesn't show any major signs of use or wear, but driving back home (~5 miles), I was sweating the whole way.

That was enough for me to go out and buy a new spare to carry. The original can stick around for events.

Regarding on where to put the flat, also ran into that issue. When I got home I just threw a large trash bag in the smuggler's box with my air pump and jumper cables. Cheap, light, and will keep the passenger seat clean.

One other point, I don't trust the wiring in the dash to support a compressor so I got a SAE to Cigarette lighter cable. That way, I can just plug that into the SAE cable I use for my battery charger and the compressor has a straight shot to the battery.

Would hate to fix a flat and have a dash fire...
