CV joint replacement options

I've just noticed a split boot in my CV joint - no real sign of escaping grease so I think (hope) I caught it early. I need to replace the boot soon (like as soon as I get the parts!) but have 3 options available to me

Replace boot - cost approx £15 - approx $22

Replace joint - cost approx £33 - approx $48

Replace driveshaft - cost approx £160 - approx $230

Given that the car has done 102000 miles any thoughts on what I should do? - the cheapest obviously appeals and I don't want to replace parts unnecessarily but I also don't want to have to do a job twice in quick succession! I also need to wait for parts so if I get the joint off and it's bad I'm off the road for a week or so - not really a problem but a factor

One other thing that has just occurred to me - do I need 2 boot kits? if I'm doing an outer am I likely to rip the inner doing it? - is it cheap insurance?

Thanks

I just did the inner right boot. Left the outer one alone. I hope that doesn't come back to bite me in a few months...

As a minimum, I would replace the split boot and remove, clean, inspect and repack the CV joint. These CV joints are amazing robust and unless it has been run for a long period of time without grease, you should be fine.

If you're really looking for a project, remove and clean/repack all of them. It's really not necessary, though.

No need to replace the driveshaft (or any of the CV joints themselves) unless there is really something wrong with them....

Roy,

I'm in the process of replacing all four CV joints, boots, etc. after discovering a rip in one of my boots. Do a search on my user name to see what I uncovered after cleaning the joints. My case may be an exception but I was surprised at what I uncovered.

I did a good search andhave downloaded the instruction sheet put up by Early-S-Man so think I know what I'm doing. I think I'll get the boot kit and see what happens when I strip it down. I've seen your problems TurboRuf and just hope mine goes a bit easier than yours

The brand new CV shaft assembly is about the same price if you remove the CV joint, repack and replace the boots. My shop was going to repack and replace the boot. I just replaced a band new shaft instead. It sounds like a logical choice because labor is expensive.

Ahhhh...but if you do it yourself, it only costs about $50 for two new boots and some grease.

Our host Wayne sells new axles (complete with two new CV joints and boots) for $346 each for my car. That makes it a no-brainer for me.

I installed complete new halfshafts and found out that that was not my problem but it is quieter.
