911SC. Problem with old vs new ignition switch assembly

Hi all, after an attempted theft of my '77 SC, the ignition was damaged so I've purchased a new lock set.

The original part is 91161301101, the newer replacement part is 96434701701.

My mechanic says the new one doesn't fit, that's it's too long and hits the bulkhead.

But the part is the replacement recommended by PP and Porsche.

Has any one had any experience of replacing the old with the new?

Thanks Ivan, that's the problem though, he's not sure how, hence why I'm on here.

I'll be selling the old one eventually but the tumbler is damaged with something jammed in it from the attempted theft.

I installed a new ignition switch (mechanical & electrical) and it fit but I did have to remove all of the steering column bolts.

just make sure he removed the security bolt(allen insert tool) completely..also the dash plate s off?where the original rivets were?No need to install the rivets at all. just 2 allen head screws to hold it in place...
I know it is bad tumbler -i would not have problem with that.

Thanks Harpo, I got more clarity from my mechanic. The 964 part goes in ok but there’s not enough room to put the electrical cap on when it’s in. And apparently it’s problematic if you put the cap on first. Did you have this issue and how did you resolve it?

Thanks!

The model year is 78 but it was manufactured and registered in 77 according to the registration docs. From what I know the MY runs from the August the year before.
