Can a Noob Oultaw?
Long time member under 313green. Lost my account after I went dark for a while. Ive owned longhoods, SCs, and a 993 2S. Took a break and got into BMW airheads. Learned a little bit of wrenching, but I am a noob for sure.
My question to this glorious forum, can I outlaw a SC or 912 by myself? Well, trans and paint would be farmed out. I have time, patience, and a little bit of money. Am I over my head? Thanks, Mike 313green@gmail.com if any leads on outlaw candidates. |
Not at all and please ignore anyone who tells you otherwise. Decide what your version of outlaw looks like and get on with it. There is plenty of solid advice available on here and also a lot of opinion. You will learn how to filter.

Thanks!!!!

I was / am a noob. Check my 75 build thread. Made a lot of mistakes and cringy moves, but pretty happy with final result. It's a lot of fun.
|
Awesome. Thx, I might have seen your thread already

You likely can "outlaw" your car. a lot of stuff is bolt-on, bolt-off. BUT..if by outlaw you actually mean backdating, then that is another level of skills required. But exhaust, wheels, steering wheel, maybe some decals and Plasti-dip - sure, all of these things are N00b friendly.

What do you all think my base price should be for the "donor" car? Im seeing SCs no lower than $35K and some 912s in the high teens, low 20's.
|
Yea, pretty basic stuff for me. No Magnus here:)

Agree with what has been said..... I was a noob to Porsche but not new to wrenching on hot rods.
My build thread: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/1002364-85-outlaw-build-thread-11.html |
Any 912 under $25k is going to be VERY rusty, that said build what you want. Loads of help and encouragement here. I’d not be afraid to dive in.

The Noob found a car.
79 SC thx techweenie. will hopefully start a build thread soon
|
Each is his own, but I wouldn’t backdate. To me the car should reflect the era in which it was built. My guess is that backdates will be frowned upon, the same way cars forward dated in the 80’s are today
Whatever base you choose, build a Hotrod from that same time period. There’s so much to choose from and yes, you can for sure do a lot yourself |
I'm not sure I'd "outlaw" a 912 without keeping it as a 912 (no 6 cylinder conversion). A 912 in good condition appears to be more rare than a 911 anymore...
|
Find a 964 if you can afford one.

The Noob has a car. Found a 79 SC that needs attention but is solid. Engine will be rebuilt by Arbormotion in AA, MI. Basic mods like 964 cams and such. Nothing too over the top.
Body needs work and I'll probably go with custom paint. Questions - should I strip to bare metal? Is that overkill? Not going for a show car. Just my own personal car. https://drive.google.com/drive/folde...bEYSSq913cCw9Y |

Mike...congratulations. Looking forward to your vision. Keep us posted.

Before you get stuck into the bodyshop work have a think about what outlaw means to you. I had my mirror holes, radio aerial holes, side repeater holes and sill mounting screw holes filled in during mine as it was part of the clean look I wanted.

Ask about the Melissa (M1) cam.

Probably similar to you. Clean, simple. Swap decklid for a non-spoiler look. Thinking of an off -white, pearl white or white/tan combo with tan bumpers - front and rear. My first 911 was a 72T sepia brown. Won't go that color but Ioved that car. Might use it for color highlight inspiration Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
