8 Hood Strut Clips?

Hi everyone - I'm tasked with changing out the hood struts to avoid any more knocks to my head.

When I was inspecting the previous struts, I noticed that there are two retaining clips on each side of the pin. Is this normal? I was under the impression that a reasonable amount is only 4 total for the hood strut system, and only one clip on the end of the pin.

Not the worst thing in the world to install, but just wanted to be sure this amount of clips is not overkill for the job.

The gas struts are always under tension. I think you can forego the cursing while attempting to install the lower retaining clips.

Only one clip per pin. Your struts are in upside down, and there should be a rubber spacer on the upper pin. See the diagram in PET.

Thanks, Marc. This helps a lot. I went back and looked at the PET manual and reinstalled to the proper orientation. Got 3/4 clips in on this go - you can guess which one is the toughest.

For the clip on the driver's side front, I just don't bother with the clip anymore. I have fought with it, and one time realized I had forgotten it the clip last time. The pin had not moved. Now I don't even try on that one. The easy to get to clips, I hook up.

Good catch Marc. Many people don't realize the extension rod should point downward. Seems the charged tube contains lube for the rod seal.

Yup, that lubes them. That said, they still only last about 3 years. Funny, but back in the day, factory originals lasted 7-8 years plus!As for clip #4, yea it's a pain, but here at Red Line we are very stubborn when it comes to correct originality. So we always do it the way the factory engineers designed it!

Thanks all. I went back and installed the spacers after my Porsche specialist gave them to me. He also let me borrow a long hemostat and I got the bottom clip in with no trouble at all. The PET manual is really helpful.
