1989 911 Driver Mirror spinning lose??

I went to fold my drivers mirror (flag style) into the car when I put it in the garage and heard a snap and now the mirror spins free. No locking in the position for driving.

Does anyone know what part broke or how to diagnose for repair?

Or is this a sign to get the newer round style!!

It is easy to take the mirror off the car and take a look. There is a small (5mm?) allen bolt holding it on.

I will take a look at it when I get home. Didn't know if it was like the steering bushing where you knew exactly what part would have let go.

I imagine its something small, matter of figuring it out.

Thanks

It is probly just the nut that keeps the spring tight that worked its way loose. They have a habit of doing that .

Loose Mirror

This is an old thread, but what was the fix? I discovered my driver's side mirror was loose. I used an Allen wrench to disconnect the mount. I discovered the washer loose. I looked in my Bentley. It shows the parts... but no procedure or specs for tightening the washer or tightening the allen screw. It's a pcar. How can there be a pcar part without a torque setting? Do I just press the washer back on and hope for the best? It's been a long time when I quizzed Pelican. It appears the DIY mentors are leaving. Sad. Scary. Nickshu, any ideas?

8-9-10 on the parts diagram must have either come loose or snapped

Yes, part 8, the adjustable washer, is loose. It might just require muscle to squeeze it back on but I was looking for previous experience or instruction.

I think I had to tighten the number 10 "guide tube". It takes either a large triple square or Torx (can't remember which) driver, so I just used a large slot screwdriver to turn it in.

To clarify, because I'm kind of thick: Is the mirror spinning on the base, or is the entire assembly loose from the door?

If it's the former, it looks like spring tension from #9 is what holds the halves together, and so your two washers and threaded bolt would have to contain the spring. Do you have all those parts in your assembly? Are they doing what they should?

Thanks. In the picture, the guide tube #10 might be threaded at the top. Does that screw into the mirror frame #1? And adjustable washers? How do they adjust?

The initial issue was the flag spinning on the mount. Once that problem is solved, tightening the mount shouldn’t be too difficult but I don’t see a torque setting… so “tighten” will be relative.

I have all the parts. They are not doing what they should.

This thread has a nice write-up.

Loose Mirror Tech Article

I had to clamp mine in a vice and make a holding jig to compress the spring.

I actually didn't see the tech article until just now. The other day I stumbled across a short video of a guy fixing this same issue on mirrors of a 924 ( same exact mirror ) he took the mirror off the car but leaving it attached by the wires and then stuck a big flat-head screw driver in the hole where the wires go in and put the mirror together that way.. here it is:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pxP2m-Pn1c
It looks risky because you can damage the wires or the paint on the door, if not super careful. I was able to do it.. not super hard.

No worries, always glad to help, lord knows I have found so much good advice here. This is really a pretty great site still, thankfully. In all honesty I wouldn't be able to own my car w/ Pelican forums.
Thanks Pelican !

Yep. With the Pelican brain trust I have repaired a couple issues well beyond my own abilities. Experience rules.
