I wanted to say something nice about URO Parts but....

I have been critical of URO Parts in the past for poor quality and appearance. I thought their aluminum visor clip might change my mind.

First the good:
The visor clip is made of metal instead of plastic. This was a major draw as the plastic clips seem to "round out" on the inside allowing the visors to flop down and not stay up.

I also noticed the clip features a set screw inside to further reduce the likelihood of failure.

Overall looks like a well thought out replacement part.



Now for the bad:
The price is quite high at $24 per clip (you need 4) plus any tax & shipping.

The metal shaft which needs to be inserted into the visor is too long. The visor has some sort of framework or something inside that does not allow the longer shaft to be inserted fully. I tested and these longer shafts on an original Porsche visor and an aftermarket reproduction. Neither would accommodate the longer shaft.




Pelican website says these are the correct pieces for my 1971 911 Targa. However the shafts are too long and do not fit the visors. I guess I am stuck returning them or cutting them to fit... which should not be the case at this price point.

As John ,said modify it..i have a Q..did you get the bracket for Targa or for Coupe?Targa take the longer pin .coupe takes shorter....are your sunvisors original to your 911 targa??

Pelican says the URO parts I ordered are correct for my Targa.

Original Porsche visors as well as replacement visors ordered specifically for Targa match each other but not URO part.

When my visors wouldn't stay up, I got an X-acto knife and cut a shim from a Coke can to put in each visor bracket. It's held up for five or six years, and when it starts falling down again I'll just do it again.

The failure is not on the visor tension side. These fail at the plastic mounting clip. The plastic cracks or rounds out inside allowing the the visor pin to spin freely instead of staying in place. The set screw and metal construction of the URO pieces are supposed to solve that common failure point.

Oh come on, it's European car from 1971. Did you really expect the Visors or the AC or the Power Windows to work for more than 5 weeks. OK maybe 8 weeks because it's a German car. I think that URO is making the correct parts for the correct amount of period correct frustration

At this juncture of life, I would say there are two choices for our OP, either shorten the pole or deepen the hole !

The Porsche part numbers for these pivots have a lot of supersessions and the fitments are a bit murky, but in general our long-pin "late-style" pivots 964 731 320 40-PRM and 964 731 319 40-PRM should fit 1975-1989 Targa and 1978-1989 convertible. They may also fit 1970 to 1974 Targa depending on depth of hole in visor.

For 914, our fitment data includes the note: "May require reuse of the original pivot pin", perhaps all 914's require short "early-style" pivot pins. It's likely one (or more) of the superseded numbers (911 731 016 40, 911 731 324 40, etc) are short-pin pivots.

Sorry we don't have concrete data, does anyone have a solid handle on the history of these applications?

Hi Gary, we submitted a complaint to our Engineering department on 4/30/2020, checking with them to see what they found out. It's odd, we sell about 3,000 of Dash Clip 999 591 310 40 annually with zero returns or complaints. They are an inexpensive item though, and often low cost items don't get returned.

Will let you know what they say.

I appreciate the response. I have 2 sets of 1971 Targa visors. Both with the short style pins. Both visors feature internal structures which do not allow use of the longer pins.

I was able to cut down the longer pins on the URO units and grind a smooth bullet shaped tip on them and use them. That said the part is not inexpensive at about $100 for all 4 so it would probably be better for URO to offer a shorter version for early cars.

At the very least communicate with Pelican so they don’t display the message, “this part fits your 1971 911 Targa”.

I will also admit Pelican was surprisingly unhelpful when I contacted them about this part not fitting.

All that said the aluminum clip with set screw is a nicely thought out design and I am hoping for many years of trouble free service from these parts.

Hi Gwmac, sorry we dropped the ball and didn't report back to you last year on this.

Our engineers checked out our inventory and found that our clips are slightly more flexible than OE, and take the same amount of force to push in and remove as OE. They popped several clips in and out of the hole several times, and had no breakage. We sell about 3,000 of these clips annually, and have had zero returns or complaints. It's a mystery.

Thanks for the heads up though, we've instructed our QC department to closely inspect all future production runs, just to be safe.
