WEVO 915 Install Help

I am in the middle of installing a WEVO Classic shifter in my 1980 SC. Everything seems to be fine when I undo the pinch bolt to line up the bolt holes. I have the shift in approximately the third gear position per the instructions. Once. I tight down the bolts the shifter moves fine in the forward and back plane. Once I tight the M8 pinch bolt on the shifter tube. Then the shift is very hard to move forward and back. Am I missing a step somewhere?
