Cool historic 911R decal recreation

I finally completed a project I've wanted to do for well over 10 years.
It couldn't have been done without the help of good friend and 911R aficionado Ernie Wilberg. Many of you may have followed his Pbase web posts... he's had great information on the R there for years.

Its a long story but will try to keep it brief:
Porsche 911R chassis number 911899 005 was one of the early R's that had competition success. The big one for 005 was the victory at the 1969 Tour de France with Gérard Larrousse driving. Larrousse also won the Tour de Corse with 005. It eventually ended up with Jo Siffert and it was part of the group of competition cars he supplied McQueen for use in the 1971 movie Le Mans.

Sometime prior to the Tour de Corse a decal was applied to the driver's side rear quarter window. The decal came from an event on the Island of Corsica — Association Sportive Automobile, Corsica Groupe Competition. The car is believed to have participated in that event. I interviewed Gérard Larrousse for a 000 Magazine story I did on the 1,000 km of Paris race at Autodrome de Linas-Montlhéry last year and I'm checking with him on the Corsica event. Hope to hear from him soon.

911899 005 was purchased from Jo Siffert's widow by a Canadian collector who replaced the window and sold it to another collector. Some time around 1998 the Canadian collector contacted the late Cris Huergas after he and his brothers along with Rodney Chew had their story in Excellence Magazine... the birth of the R Gruppe soon followed. The guy offered the quarter window to him. Cris put him in touch with Ernie and he was able to purchase it and he still has it. The photo of Cris shows him holding the quarter window up to the same area of his ’69 911S of the time.

Ernie found confirmation of the car with the decal through photos published in John Starkey's book, “From R to GT3R”showing the ASA decal in the exact area it was applied to the window he’d just purchased.

The Corsica Competition Groupe is still in existence but they aren't responsive to inquiries. As most of you know, the car is in the Rev's Institute collection today, without the Corsica decal.

So, here it is... I've recreated the decal and I’m offering a copy to any early Porsche 911 enthusiast who might want to have one. The preliminary examples look pretty good and Ernie has checked one for accuracy and sizing. My test print is slightly larger and I’m making the adjustment. Also note, the decal is NOT a perfect copy of the original but its very close and close enough for a hack like myself. Hope you agree.

The interior of the island image in the background is clear. The decal will be front adhesive to stick on the inside, printed on clear vinyl and cut in the shape of the image with a small boarder.

Not everyone will care or get the coolness behind it but surely many of you will. I think its great because it has relevance to the early history of the R Gruppe.

The cost will be around $6 each plus shipping.

Simply respond if you're interested.
When I get a total I'll contact you with what you need to do to get one.

Thanks guys.
MM

I don't have an early enough car to run this type of decal, but it's fantastic to hear these stories which are borne out of proverbial labors of love.

I meant to ask you on the other forum, are you having these made on a clear backing like the original or a white backing. I missed that info.

I know my post is a bit rambling but it's in there:
"The decal will be front adhesive to stick on the inside, printed on clear vinyl and cut in the shape of the image with a small border."

thanks for your interest. I'll let you know when they're in.

Very cool Mark and great job on the recreation! I definitely want one. Was wearing your shirt out in Colorado the other day and a woman at the hotel asked me where she could get one for her husband.

Sign me up Mark. You did a fantastic job. So you think this race would have been around 1969 or a bit earlier? Just curious.
