Replaced Throttle Rod Coupling - Have Questions
The 54 year old (I think) throttle rod coupling in my '67 gave up this summer. Fortunately I was in my driveway, just moving the car.
I just replaced the coupling with the metal jacketed version, and ran into a few issues and am looking for guidance. I replaced the accelerator rod boot, as I had to cut the old one off to access the forward lock nut. With the metal jacket, the revised coupling is larger in diameter and the replacement boot I purchased from our host (911-432593-01-M104) is a very tight fit and appears no different from the one I removed. I seem to remember reading somewhere that the boot was revised as well to fit over the larger coupling body. However, I can't find that post anywhere. I need to do it again as I tore the new boot when trying to pull it over the coupling. Does anyone know if my memory is correct and there is a boot that fits over the coupler better? On a related note, the new coupler is going to be "fun" to remove in the future as the one of the locknuts is essentially "inside" the open end of the metal jacket. Any best practices for accessing that? I'm thinking a bad angle with needle nose pliers, but I'm willing to listed to the wisdom of the forum. I'm also thinking of putting a stack of washers between the lock nut and coupler on this end when I go in and replace the boot so that the lock nut is more accessible. I was interested in why the coupler failed. Upon investigation, it appears my throttle stop was fully screwed into the lowest position so it was essentially not present. I'm surprised the coupler lasted as long as it did. |
