Simple MSD Question

Hello,

Can an MSD 6AL be mounted under the drivers seat?
Is the length of run for the coil and distributor wires too long from there?

Yes, you can run longer wires. But, MSD says to go a gauge up in size if you do so. In other words, use thicker wires.

I would make sure no other wires are run parallel to the MSD wires as they carry a lot of voltage and will most likely create a lot of EMI....

Have you any idea of the separation requirements? Eventually I'll be running Megasquirt from under the seat as well.

Basic wiring considerations are applicable here. I have seen plenty of MSD installations in the floor area of 911's near or under seats.

Likely the biggest thing to be concerned from a noise standpoint is the trigger wire.

I doubt any can say what the "separation requirements" are from a quantitative standpoint.

In my experience, "good judgment" reigns supreme here.

The trigger is most affected by EMI which is why it is shielded. The wire from the MSD to the coil carries high voltage and is likely to generate the most EMI. When I ran dual MSD ignitions, I had to run the trigger wire away from other wires to keep its signal intact. I was able to run the coil wires in my main harness without issue. But, I did not have any sophisticated sensors that are affected by EMI in my EFI setup.

So the trigger wire is the white one from the distributor?

So I'll use shielded wire to extend that one and keep it away from everything else.
Might mount the MSD under the left seat and the Megasquirt under the right seat.

If you are using points, then you don’t need to shield the trigger wire. The signal wires that Scott is talking about is for magnetic sensors like on the SC. The white wire is for points.

Thanks, Andy.....yeah the Green and Violet trigger wires are what I was thinking about.
