Squeak factory help?
'86 Cab M491 almost all done. All bushings and suspension parts new. Problem: Car is an Effin' Squeak Factory. I've used silicone lube, water soluble lube, everything I can think of. Nothing lasts more than a few days. Work done by a great Porsche shop, and they have NO clue. I swear with the windows up and driving it is VERY noticeable. All OEM rubber, no Poly bushings. Suggestions? I already have earplugs. If it played the right tune I swear kids would come out to buy ice cream!

Hi tschall- FWIW, I threw everything at the squeaking (front end) and nothing helped until I replaced the control arms with new Dansk units from our host. That was 4 years ago and she's been squeak/trouble-free ever since!

You said you’ve used things and it hasn’t lasted long. Have you diagnosed where the squeaks are coming from? If not - Some things to check that can cause squeaks in suspension.
1. Sway bars. Make sure they are torqued down properly. I actually had one drop out of the bottom of the car. Squeaks every time you go over a bump. 2. Make sure dampers are torqued properly. People often torque them down before the car is loaded up and forget to torque them again when you drop the car. 3. Rear sway bar links. People forget to reconnect these. Though usually that’s not a squeak it’s a clunk.

Guys, thanks to all. Everything referenced above is NEW OEM parts put in place by a very good Porsche shop. I have driven about 300 miles on the set up and the squeaks won't go away. Assured all was cleaned and lubed and adjusted properly. 80% front end, other 20% Right rear. Control arms, sway bars, dampers all re lubed and checked. I'm at a loss. Car squeaks a bit when stopped and can semi locate generally those points. I guess it will have to wait for winter lay up and again disassembly - re assembly... Keep the suggestions coming.

You shouldn't use any lube, rubber bushings isn't supposed to move. Except sway bar maybe.
Which bushings did you replace and where did you get them? Edit: Control arms you say: you have two options: OEM like bushings from Elephant racing or complete new control arms with bushings already fitted. Anything else and you will have squeak. Get the right stuff.

Where would you even put different lubricants on the car after OEM bushings are replaced? Also, as noted none of the bushings should be lubricated.
Edit: Also squeaks should be really easy to find, especially for a dedicated shop. You can hit a bump with a single wheel, front/rear pair, side to side, do it again without the sways installed, takes not much time at all and should pinpoint the sound easily. From there the appropriate bushings should be easy to figure out. That it should be easy makes me distrust the shop doing the work in the first place. And assuming the squeaks weren't there before the suspension was worked on? Last edited by David Inc.; 09-14-2021 at 09:27 AM.. |

The car is not accessible for the next week. Having new wheels and tires put on. As to the "easy to find", on some of the noise, yes. On other noises, it is road motion/bumps, etc... hard to pinpoint. The comment as to where to apply the silicone/rubber lube, I put it on liberally anywhere I could see the bushing/end/connection and blew it in with compressed air a bit. It stops the noise 80% + for a few days, then its back. I will post part #'s also when I can for all OEM rubber bushings. Again NO POLY bushings. Lastly the "Shop" is well known and does excellent work. They have spent hours attempting to rectify, and will have to do a R&R if problem can't be solved.

If you buy a OEM rubber bushing its to small because otherwise you cant install it, the downside is that it doesn't bond and therefore moves an squeaks. Get another shop.

Hell I re-bushed my entire suspension and didn't have any squeaks, it's not an especially difficult job to do if you use the right parts. Last edited by David Inc.; 09-14-2021 at 11:10 AM.. |

Thanks all for your patience. I have read and researched all the comments. I am borrowing a friends remote Mic to use to pinpoint and record the sounds. All new 930 tie rod ends installed by shop. Control arm bushings new, part #ERMP-2290000, same. After some discussion it appears that a possible area of concern is the shock tower upper bushing(s) for 65% of noise. The car was aligned/adjusted for camber/toe and the upper left side bushing was definitely moved (right side as well) from position it had been in for several decades. These bushings may need replacement. Spring plates may also need to be re-torqued. I will post a video/audio when done.
I appreciate all the input! |
