Old member / New car intro: Dunkelblau '85 Carrera

Saying hello and sharing a few pics, because I’m definitely going to have a question or two as we bring this lovely Dunkleblau (347/K5) girl back up to shape. She’s currently at 204k miles, completely stock, plenty of rock chips and light checking in the clearcoat but otherwise nicely preserved, always a CA car with documentation from Day 1, three prior owners and a clean Carfax, FWIW.

By way of background, I’m a longtime member here but haven't been active (moreso on Rennlist - same user name). Between 1997 and now, wife and I have owned: ’70 911T, ’87 944S, ’07 Cayman S, ’03 Carrera 2 and a ’70 911 Spec racer. Currently we still have a ’12 997.2 C2S 6sp coupe. I’m a PCA National DE instructor, former regional CDI, yada yada (nobody cares, get to the pics!!).

First question: On the window sticker “Special leather interior ($1790)” seems to translate to tan or champagne full leather seats with a dark brown leather dashboard, steering wheel and headliner. Does anyone know the exact color names for these two leathers or the (light golden blonde) carpet color that came with this package? The carpet color in particular would be good to know because ours is very matted and if I replace it I’d like to keep it original.

Thanks and cheers to all. Very excited about this new car!
John

Welcome John! Blue over tan interior is a beautiful combo, hope to own one someday myself.

Not sure what color your floor mats are called, but I’ve been trying to get rid of a reproduction pair in “Bamboo” for a while now. They’re free if you want them (you in LA by chance?)

Here’s a link to my for-sale post: 1984-1989 Carrera Floor Mats (Bamboo)

A beautiful example of the 1985 Carrera. Looks to be in top condition.

You can find the 1985 brochure with the interior color names & codes here (cannot attach a PDF here): http://coochas.com/brochures/Resources/911-1985.pdf
Looking at your invoice, I believe the interior color code is 88, somewhere there must be a clear reference table on the net ( this post maybe)?

I have almost the same invoice for my 1985 but the leather is referred to as 'All Leather interior' and it is a black leather steering wheel, black leather headliner, black leather dashboard cover, leather around the shifter, leather shifter knob as far as I can tell.

Enjoy your beauty

Frank

Thank you FrankM! Those two links are pure gold and solved the riddle of Interior Code 88 (Champagne carpets, Champagne leather seats and doors, Brown leather dash, wheel and uppers, and brown leatherette headliner). Alles ist klar!

Cheers,
John

Thanks for sharing your original sticker. Fun and useful to walk through. I don’t have one for my 87, but quite relatable.

I'm not going to turn this into a project thread, but the last 6 weeks have been busy:

OUT came several bucketloads of original, 35-year-old wear items plus one mid-'80s alarm system:

OUT came the most easily-reversible 20lbs of a non-functional AC system:

IN went a new Blaupunkt Bremen head unit, plus new F&R speakers in the stock locations and a slim 8" powered sub under the passenger seat (Focal, Retrosound, Alpine, respectively)

IN went new brown Coco mats F&R. which nicely tie-in with the brown full leather upper dash, wheel and headliner:

ON went the new tires and wheels: 7"x8"x16 Fuchs, with 205/55F and 245/45R Bridgestone Potenza Sports:

But wait, there's more:
Major engine-out service,
cam oil lines replaced (originals were clogged),
cams re-machined by Elgin (these were starting to show wear due to above),
cam rollers replaced,
fuel lines replaced F&R (originals weren't leaking, but dry and cracked),
oil lines replaced in engine bay,
all new stock rubber suspension bushings,
new Bilstein Sports F&R,
brake calipers rebuilt,
brake flex lines replaced,
new clutch, (full kit)
new oil pressure sender,
new intake manifold gaskets,
new cap/rotor/plugs,
injectors sent out and refurbished,
a lot of minor things.

The good news is the original leakdown and compression tests were verified as good, so we didn't have to get into anything major with the engine. It's basically a 204k mile car that needed 10+ years worth of deferred maintenance! lol.

With all that accomplished, we've put several hundred miles on it and it runs and drives like a fresh, stock '85 Carrera, so all is well. Now that the new suspension has settled, next step is to get the ride height adjusted and the alignment dialed-in better.

Anyway, thanks for reading. Here's hoping the next twelve months are comparatively cheap & easy relative to the last six weeks!

Colors

Fantastic color combo! Porsche had so many great colors available, I cannot understand why it seems like later G series were 50% red and the rest were white and black with maybe a few silvers sprinkled in…

Thanks for all the kind words. It is a beautiful and unusual color combo on a 3.2, and the car has real charm as a driver. My wife already claims it's her favorite.

One thing I forgot to mention in the list above, we also had turbo tie rods put in, "while we were in there."

My next project is to fix the stiff inner door pulls by updating the bowden cables and pull rods, bushings, etc (I've ordered the new 993 part numbers that superseded the original mechanisms). I'm also upgrading to Rennline AL interior pull handles from our host here. We'll see how it goes!

Cheers,
