speedometer question

Hi there Pelicanhead,

Since a few weeks the miles on my speedometer don't count anymore. The daycounter stays at 0 and the car milage doesn't count up. The speed indecation on the speedometer is OK.

What do you think, is the speedometer toast or is there a separate signal input for speed indecation and milage counting and should I look at the input signal wiring / sensor?

The lady is a '80 US 911SC Targa.

Thank you,
Bart.

The odometer (daycounter) gear is probably broken. Same thing happened to mine and it was around $100 to have fixed at a Speedo Repair shop here in the US.

I have heard of people being able to fix this themselves, assuming they could find the part. Check the archives because I seem to remember someone posting a link to a source.

Doug is right. Forget the wiring, the odometer and what you call the daycounter (trip meter) are mechanically driven, by gears. It's easy to fix if you can get the part. All you need to do is carefully pry the bevel off the speedo, from the back, and open the instrument. But it's probably worth having a shop do it, because they replace the bevel with a roller device; if you do it yourself, it's obvious to anybody who removes the speedo and examines the bevel--a standard used-911-purchase check--that the speedometer has been opened, which leads to suspicions about the mileage having been turned back.

If the gear on the odometer is stripped, it is actually a faily easy fix...easily a DIY. You'll need to take the speedo apart per Wayne's 101 Upgrades Book. Once you have determined the round gear is indeed stripped, there's a guy in MA...Jeff Caplan that sells the replacement gear for $25. Great guy, great customer feedback etc. He's selling one on Ebay now, or here is his website: http://www.odometergears.com/

good luck

Wink

Thanks guys,
I'll get to it next WE.
As it happend I opened up the speedometer last year in order to have nice little red km/h indications next to the mph's. Needed to do this to pass the Belgian technical inspection. The local inspection seemsto be staffed with fiat, renault and skoda lovers freaking out when inspecting a REAL CAR.

Anyway fat chance I initiated the wear out then.

Thanks,
Bart.

These gears are famous for stripping. Rumor has it that they get stripped when reseting the odometer when the car is moving. Anyone know if there's any truth to that or is it an urban myth?

BTW I replaced mine a couple months ago. It was so bad it was crumbling like it was made from soggy sugar.
