I read the post on FB as well. If this guy is so busy, what is he doing on FB?
But having said that, I find it funny how many non mechanical people that don't listen to Jake Raby on FB as they have no idea who he is. |
I like his book but I would never let him clean my carburetors.

101 projects was a bit less useful than I anticipated, though I did manage to take an entire engine apart with Wayne's engine book combined with Bruce Anderson's, both great resources that help connect the dots as many have already pointed out. Now, putting it back together... piece of cake, right!? Still on the hunt for factory manuals vol. I and II at a reasonable price or on long term loan :D |

Well... having completed Tony's class I can say he referenced Wayne's book often.

100% Accurate. |
I will say Jake has improved his delivery over the last few years... He is smart, well researched and very experienced.
Wayne's book is good, far better than the "projects" books. Great source for one stop technical data and torque specs. It does have an assembly technique I am not a fan of and would never use, but who cares? Bentley Manuals have errors too... And I think the publisher did release a few "corrections" as well. It has well written descriptions and explanations of many procedures that don't easily make sense until you actually perform the task. It is isn't a bible, it is a very good book, treat it as such and you will be happy. Cheers |
Let's see....Bentley has the 3.0 firing order bass ackwards....Wayne suggests going thru the frunk to reclock the windshield wipers instead of pulling a gauge out and reaching thru the hole.
Bentley's advice blew a guy's air box.....Wayne's? No big deal. Smoke another bowl everyone, move along, nothing to see.... |
Having zero experience digging into engine internals, I did my top end a few years and ~18k miles ago using only Wayne's book and it hasn't blown up yet.
|
Used the engine rebuild book exclusively when I had to do head studs several years ago. And now that I'll be doing a top end refresh, I'm certain it'll be my go to. My brother used Wayne's book when he rebuilt his engine. There's a lot of good info to be had.
|
I did a complete rebuild of my 3.0 using Wayne’s book
18,000 miles later still works. Sure I also had Bruce’s book, but why would that be a disclaimer? I spent 10 years studying it before I did the rebuild. Bought book 2003. Bought car 2004. Rebuilt 2014 |
I'm guessing the main FB naysayer is motor meister.
|
Wayne's book is a really good guide on how to rebuild an engine. Is it an absolute gospel, of cause not, nothing is!
But it will keep you on a (there may be more) good path. I've used it several times. It's relevant to know that Wayne wrote the book, but the knowledge in it is a collaboration with professionals, don't remember if he states who in the book . Facebook should be used as entertainment, not fact finding.... |
My original advise to the poster was to come here post his questions and concerns and when ready dig into his car and fix the head studs. ;)
Part of the draw to old 911's is the hands on community. |

I can't say enough good things about Wayne's book. Using it and this forum, my SC motor now has 40k miles without even a weep of oil leaking from anywhere. Some of that can be attributed to the "ultimate case sealant thread" and Henry's Supertec sealant kit available from Pelican.

So glad I don't use Facebook. I know I'm missing out on expert advise on my 911 and life in general. I'll just have to make do.

I read the book at least three times, and made notes and asked questions when I needed clarification. I’d never attempted any engine work without that book.
Did I make some mistakes? Yup. Few if any were the books fault. But the engine seems pretty amazing to me after about 2500 miles since rework. Top and bottom, bottom was fine until a birdie found a set of 3.2 SS , then JE pistons, cam, tensioners studs … oh well Recommend the book to anyone building engine, and don’t forget Bentley. |
That shop owner was probably thinking he's going to get business by disparaging Wayne's book. I used it to very successfully rebuild my engine a few years ago and it was invaluable. There is NO WAY i'd have even attempted it without the book. Keep in mind I still spent money with Porsche shops for the inspection of major parts and all the cylinder head work. That shop owner also seems to think large numbers of Porsche owners are going to decide to rebuild their own engines, which is ridiculous. I did it partly to save money but, more importantly, I LOVE working on cars. I can't touch my other cars since they are new...working on my car is a hobby. If there's nothing wrong I'll find SOMETHING to fix. Wayne is a benefit to the Porsche community.
