Wayne is a nice and very bright guy and the book is very useful.
Having said that... Page 166 regarding Camshaft Overlap or Cam Timing See attached. I think this sentence could really mess up a lot of motors and it over complicates an otherwise simple procedure. I believe a 40 year engine builder like Karl would have written it as you actually do it and explain the crank pulley hatch marks so peolpe really understand what they're doing in relationship to what's happening inside a 6 cylinder 4 stroke. When I check Left Cam Overlap at #1 intake valve.. I simply begin at Z1 or TDC for cylinder #1 (cams have no idea where the crank is) and rotate the crank CW 360 degrees to read overlap on the left side camshaft. At this time (after rotating the crank 360 degrees) You're now ready to check the Right Side camshaft for overlap by rotating another 360 degrees while reading your dial indicator gauge which is now set up on #4 intake valve. Note: it's helpful to have two dial indicators set up so you don't have to fuss with one back and forth! Also Please Note your INDICATOR TRAVEL because if set incorrect in the dial indicator gauge 'Z block' your readings will be off. There are many factors also that can throw off your accuracy like your cam sprockets being worn or the big cam bolt being loose as you check readings etcetera. I think Wayne's sentence is written like an MIT grad and may be confusing. This is a big step in the rebulld process and having a guy like Karl at Thoroughbred proof read these critical sections would have been a great idea. There really is no replacement for experience. Wayne isn't a professional Porsche mechanic and he probably points this out in his reference book. A Porsche mechanic would tell you over the phone how to do this procedure in simple terms. My two cents worth, Matt @the_r_institute http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1633866255.jpghttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1633868231.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1633868231.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1633868231.jpghttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1633868830.jpg Holbert's race mechanic Bob Russo explained it to me in one minute. It's really simple. |
I note the errata sheet is referenced above in post #61 - it pays to remember to check for corrections and then pencil them into your working manual.
OT: I've been a Senior writer and Manager for a tech writing department at a major German Enterprise company for some time. We make mistakes, but we can pull down and correct our collateral in minutes. For those of us holding an analog manual, we must refer to the corrections that is part of what we paid for. |
I have Wayne's book and the shop manuals. I use them both with the forum and some U-tube.
Stomski's video on cam timing was the simplest to follow. |
