Strange rubbery resistance in shifter after new trans mounts
Last week I installed all new oem bushings in the shifter and tunnel linkage of my ‘82 911SC. What an amazing transformation! The next project was Rebel Racing OEM+10% stiffness trans and motor mounts. While the mounts eliminated the last bit of slop in the driveline, now I have a strange resistance and lack of feel going into the 1/3/5th gears. 2nd/4th still has a satisfying effortless “thunk” when finding the gear.
I looked at the linkage in the tunnel and under the boot, but doesn’t like there is anything obvious that is binding. I also readjusted the coupler to oem spec. Any thoughts on what could be causing the resistance? |

The new mounts would shift the trans and make the original linkage now incorrect. Walk through the exact process you used to do the alignment the first time and it should be fine.

Each gear position should exhibit a small amount of slop on all four sides, when you stir the shift lever in each gear. The lever should not feel pinned to one of the sides? As Alistair pointed out, subtle changes introduced by shifting the motor and trans to install the new mounts, likely changed the coupler adjustment a bit? |
