70-71 911E Hydropneumatic conversions

Newbie shopping around for a 70 or 71 911E and noticed that many of these cars have had hydropneumatic conversions often with 911S units fitted with aluminum calipers.

Can anyone tell my why this modification was done? Is this desirable? Do these conversions affect the value of the car since they are modifications? Are these modifications difficult to do?

The units were not one of Porsche's better ideas. It is considered a factory upgrade to replace with standard components.

In fact, if you Autocross the car, the rule book from PCA says: "Hydro-pneumatic Suspension: removal of this suspension is not only allowed, but is encouraged."

If you really want a car with a hydro-pneumatic suspension, get a Citroen.

No but they are one of my "2 week" cars. I think there is something about the funky shape. And the one spoke steering wheel.

I recall seeing a copy of a period Porsche Parts and Accessories flyer which listed the complete conversion package. It consisted of a new cross member, torsion bars, Koni struts, and aluminum S calipers, and was sold by dealers. My 69T had this kit applied to it sometime, under a PO.

Someone jerry rigged coil springs on my '69E hydro struts. Replaced the whole works with SC stuff.
