Talking Fishcop's First Trackday (Pics)

Well last Saturday I went in my first trackday with the Porsche. Although I have a few laps under my belt on motorcycles and (many years ago) police cars.... This was by far the most fun I've had in quite some time! I thought I'd share......

This is Queensland Raceway (also known as Willowbank). Frankly it's a pretty boring sort of a track, very flat, but safe and visible to fans from nearly every aspect (certainly no Laguna Seca or Brands Hatch).

Out of interest, I'm told the white RS is the real thing. It certainly passed me like I was standing still!

Cheers

I've got to say that the sporto worked flawlessly. I suspect I was quicker than I should have been due to the fact I could "cheat" some corners by leaving it in 3rd rather than dropping to 2nd and just concentrating on my line.

I forgot to mention that the little white 912/11 is another Pelican's (SteveF 911) It is a 2ltr swb that circulates 10 seconds quicker than me

Thumbs up

Nice Pic's John.
Tracked my TR4 around Willowbank in '98 in the Qld Nat's.
Flat, failsafe and fun.

Wooohoo. Looks like a fun day John.

Hey I think the track looks great - I judge them by how much runoff they have.

I guess you're right Bill. Perhaps I'm being overly critical considering it is such a forgiving track.

John,

Looks like a smooth track. How much negative camber on the rear wheels?

Hi Guys
I ran the day with my 15" 7x8 (the crack didn't get any bigger and I spoke to a few guys who seemed to think it wasn't a worry "at this stage") I can't quite remember my camber specs... I think it is -1.5 on rears and -2.5 on the fronts. The fronts are noticably cambered.

A mate brought along a set of 16" 7x9 (turbo) rims and tyres from his car to check if they'd fit my car (they do) but if I'm going to spend money on the car at this stage, I'd rather it be on the engine/gearbox.

Queensland Raceway is billiard table smooth for nearly the entire track, there are a couple of bumps entering and half way through turn one, but that's about it. It is very fast with the bigger cars pulling around 260kph on the back straight.

I can't say the slushbox was a hinderance on this day as I wasn't really exploring the edge of my car's capabilities, but it will be changed at some time. I have a lead on a 2.2/901 combo that I am considering building up into a high compression 2.4 "S" spec and making a light-weight ST replica. But I'm in the process of buying another house since our move to Toowoomba so it's going to have to wait.

It'll be good to have you Mark!

There is another track called "Morgan Park" outside of Toowoomba (Warrick) which has just been lengthened to 3.5 km and resurfaced in hotmix, it used to be just a small "club track", but they seem to have some grander plans now. I'll be having a run there in July. From all accounts it's a real buzz with lots of rises/falls and more left turns than Willowbank.

When do you see yourself back in Oz?

We did that one too - Morgan park is (was?) hairy! Fun, but not kind to the novice.
Pushing it a little too far, one of the guys rolled his (BB of Triumphs) concours TR3.
Keep us posted, John on what you reckon of the new surface and layout.

Yep I think we're speaking of the same track, it has a reputation. However this was the point of lengthening and upgrading for specific CAMS approval.

John,

You will love Morgan Park, there is a 90 degree left hander that is flat in third gear, blind over a crest and off camber on the exit.

I will see you there in July.

Can you mail me the pics you took at Willowbank so I can put them on the club web site. My camera got stolen a couple of weeks back and I am waiting for the insurance to come through.

Well done
Steve

John,

When are we back in Oz - years!

When are we buying a house - soon as the prices get realistic - no actually sometime in the next 12 months hopefully.

We've been saying that for 12 months though. In December 2002 we were there looking at Southport mainly but just couldn't get what we were after.
