First Start in 1 Year - Tips?
About to start my car for the first time in a year (13-ish months). It's a '77 with CIS injection, and it has always started right away for me. Didn't put anything in the gas tank, didn't put anything in the oil.
My plan is to build oil pressure without fuel pressure by pulling the fuel pump fuse and cranking until the low oil light goes off. Then, fuse back in, run position, lift the air sensor plate to remove air in the line, and crank until life returns. Any thoughts? Should I put fuel injector cleaner in the gas? Is there a patron saint of home Porsche mechanics to pray to? |

Did you have ethanol gas in it?
If so remove the gas and use the above method after changing the oil. |

Question regarding the start up.
How long should you let it idle for? Is revving up to 3k good enough once it's warm? How often should I start the car? Once a week or so? Sorry to Jack your thread, thought it's relevant Q's Upon a yr of start up. Good luck! |

Cranking it without the fuel pump relay is a good measure to build some oil pressure.
I would put the relay back in and hit the key. Air plate should do whatever it needs when cranking. Get it going, get some new fuel in it, and drive it ![]()

The only sage advice I can give is to roll it out of your garage and make sure no neighbors are around as the plume of smoke might be mistaken for the announcement of a new pope.

I think your plan is fine. The gas is too old, but it's not varnish and the car is fuel-injected. I would top it off with fresh gas and drive through a full tank and then some. Get everything hot and enjoy some full-throttle pulls...
Check tires and fluids before and after, etc...Tires will likely start flat and round out on the drive. Brakes probably need to be flushed...Oil should probably be changed earlier this time around—it doesn't just degrade with time, but that's a long time for moisture and contaminants to find their way in and never get burned off. |

Old news: My '83 sat for 13 months while I was deployed to Desert Storm. When I finally got home and started the car, everything was fine (unplugged the coil, and built oil pressure). HOWEVER, the second day of driving the car, I started popping head studs. Being in the Navy, the car was located in a semi-salt laden atmosphere and the corrosion combined with heat cycles caused the failure (lab tested to determine why so many popped). I did an upper-end, replaced the valve seats and guides, bought the latest and greatest head studs and it's been together since. Kind of an "Aw s**t" moment for me, but something I'm now glad I did. Not saying you'll have the same experience, but be aware.
