paint advice

Hi - no experience with rust, paint or body issues. Any advice on the best way to address this? Is this a part I can purchase, have painted and replace vs. have someone do extensive paint work?

Those panels, one on each side, are removable. On the stock (metal) ones, you unscrew the end caps, peel off the rubber strip then remove the screws which hasten it to the body/rocker panel, being careful to note which spacers along the lower edge go where.

From the photos, it looks like yours are made from fiberglass (as opposed to steel); is that correct?

I'm guessing the car was previously gold and re-sprayed red, or perhaps the rockers were re-rockguarded and the paint isn't adhering well.

Hi John - thanks. You are correct, they are fiberglass. I have never noticed that before. I assume that means they are not original, but also no rust- ha.

Ha! It sure looked like fiberglass.

Maybe they're fine and have some benefit, like less weight? Used metal ones are often available reasonably because they get removed when folks backdate or do the sports-purpose look on an SC or Carrera (same on both, assuming regular/narrow-body).

I redid the metal ones on my black SC by pulling them from the car, sanding them down to bare metal, then coating with epoxy priming, aerosol chip-guard (I would have used SEM or UPOL brands) then single stage urethane top coat. Note that epoxy primer and urethane top coat are both catalyzed, two-part products and require good safety gear (respiration and skin covered). You could do the same using aerosol primer and top/color coat (you can get aerosols of specific colors made), and make it look excellent, but the strength and durability of each would be far less than the more chemically-enhanced finishes.

Maybe this is an easier plan:
- acquire used metal parts
- locate the paint code of your 911
- take both to neighborhood bodyshop with good reputation and ask them to refinish the parts with stonechip guard and paint
- install at home.

Best of luck,
John

wouldn't it be preferable to match the rocker paint color to the existing lower door paint color itself (as it's had close to 40 years exposure to the elements) than to simply paint to a "color code"?

Some people prefer the look with the rocker panels removed and just go without them. Take them off and see what you think before buying new parts. You have to take them off anyways.
