Did factory ever respray before shipping?

Has anyone ever heard of the factory (specifically in the early days, thru mid 70s) ever changing colors/ respraying tubs at the factory (and in doing so possibly painting over another color?) Maybe if they had say an overabundance of less popular colors and needed to somewhat quickly get more popular colors out?

How many bare tubs do you think they may have possibly had just sitting around and would that number have been enough to actually make a difference?

So the question is, is this something someone trying to sell you a car is telling you or are you selling a car and are looking for a good story to explain an unexplained color change?

An old coworker of mine worked at a dealer on long island he said they were very meticulous about the bodywork if one came over with a damaged panel they would respray the entire car.

You mean holding tubs back from the line just in case???

Or, Pulling tubs off the line after say, suspension and interior work was done and then respraying them?

Or waiting until drive train was installed and then pulling tubs to respray???

I think someone is making up a story to explain the unexplainable.

Doesn’t sound like, “German efficiency” to me.

I was assigned to the US Army post engineers in Stuttgart in 1970 and spent most of my time there until 1976. I often visited the factory to buy parts and never saw or heard anything about repainting new cars. Also, Porsche had a waiting list back then and I believe all cars were made according to order.

Never heard of it done before it leaves the factory, but it may have been done by the dealer. Lots of cases of dealer-issued repairs due to damage incurred during shipping. Probably cases of it done at port too.

There are a few cars that had full color changes by the dealer in order to get them off the lot.

As for something more extensive, there are a few cars that had full color changes by the dealer in order to get them off the lot.
That is possible. Dealerships have certainly had to repair a panel or repair a car due to delivery damage. It was not done at the factory.

I have a 75 that appears to have been started out as yellow but ended up silver. It shows up around the tunnel.

Original color........

I have a black 77S coupe with very low mileage when I got it and noticed later the olive-green paint of the headlight buckets and engine bay. It looks like the black car was re-painted from olive-green to black with the motor installed. I was wondering about the paint color mystery ever since I got it. Maybe this would explain about the over spray.

The Penske Targa was resprayed blue over original silver at the factory. I also saw a 911 damaged at the dock prior to shipping being repaired prior to reshipping.
One can never be absolute about what the factory did when it was still a relatively small producer.

My understanding is that if a car was damaged and or the paint didn’t meet quality standards it would be repainted at the factory. As things were done by hand the paint thickness was also less consistent back then, I think automation started with the 996. Nathan Merz does a great job explaining it in this PCA video on the 993. https://you.be/7BWwkb8l8eA

As most of us know, cars wouldn’t always make it across the ocean unscathed and some cars needed bodywork at the port.
