Starter Motor Options for 3.6L and G50/01
I have a factory unshortened G50/01 trans and am planning on running a 3.6L (964 RSR/GT3RS 4.0) flywheel. This presents an issue for the starter motor as the G50-01 bell housing has a larger hole that doesn't support the forward bushing of a 3.6L starter.
I am not a huge fan of the idea of stacking another ring gear on top of the pressure plate to be able to use a 911 starter so there appear to be 2 options unless I am missing something. 1. Machine a custom insert and sleeve the bell housing of the G50/01 so that it supports a standard 3.6L starter like a G50/03 2. Use one of the IMI Hi Torque starters that does not have a forward support. Do the IMI starters without the forward support work well and not end up chewing the teeth off the ring gear with shaft deflection? With the ring gear farther away, the starter shaft does get pretty long. Anyone running a 3.6L/G50 combo that has a reliable starter setup? 964 tiptronic doesn't solve the issue. It is roughly the same dimensions as a 911 starter. It doesn't have the longer reach required for a 3.6L ring gear.
After lots of googling and a few reports of damaged ring gears with the unsupported hi torque starter, I think I have talked myself into using a GT3 starter (smaller and lighter then 964/993) and machining up a custom insert for the bell housing to support the forward bushing. |

The damaged ring gears were not caused by the Hi-Torque starters. The ring gears were bad.....

I had a IMI starter with my 3.0L/915 combo and it worked great but the '87-'89 g50 bell housing is a different animal and has some subtle difference to a 964 g50 so the standard 3.6L starter isn't a direct drop in. I will have to press in a sleeve to be able to support the front of the 3.6L starter. As far as I can tell the GT3/Turbo/GT2 starter is just an updated part number from BOSH. Slightly shorter motor body and a little lighter. SR0451N is the BOSH number for it. If you look up 996-604-107-02 from Porsche it shows up as a super session of 964-604-104-00 Last edited by Evan Fullerton; 12-08-2021 at 10:30 PM.. |

That’s interesting that it Supersedes a 964 part number .
Iirc I installed a 993 turbo starter on my 964 c2 many years ago and it was a direct fit . * when I say I , I think it might have been 9m that actually did the work . |

They are all the same part now as far as I can tell. A GT3RS 4.0L flywheel is a 964 RSR part number so it makes sense they all are interchangeable.
'87-'89 911 use the same starter as a 911 though so the machining of the bell housing is slightly different to a 964 and newer. |
