The motor (if you have flag mirrors) should be part of the black rubber thing. Pry off the glass with your fingers or putty knife etc. Undo 3 retaining screws to loosen black rubber. Disconnect motor by seperating the connector plug. Swap motor and refit everything.

Chris,
The mirror is held by some kind of retention device that is accessed thru a small hole on the bottom of the mirror case. Lee, Thanks for the referral to Excellence. Mike

Hmm...not sure which bit you mean
![]() Remember, you don't have to remove the whole mirror just the black piece and the glass. Held on by 3 screws; (borrowed your pic 89911 ![]()

The motor goes for $251 from local authorized dealer less $100 from PCA. Pelican has it for $219 (I think).
The mirror shown by Chris appears to be for later model than '85.

Thats the ones fitted to my car ('82 SC). I thought they were fitted from about 1977?!

I will try some pics this weekend. The new motor arrives next week and I want to be sure that it's not just a loose connection.

It's been a while since I remove my mirror to tighten the base (Base is loose from folding the mirror back to many times), but I think there are two (2) small electrical motors inside the mirror. One to move the mirror left to right and the other to ove it up and down. I can't believe that both motors would die at the same time. SOUND MORE LIKE A LOOSE CONNECTION. I think the newer aero mirrors has the slot that you can fit a screw driver in to loosen the mirror, but the old flag mirror is remove carefully by prying out the mirror.

Well, I found out a few things the hard way about my driver's mirror, one of which will explain how both motors can seem to die at the same time.
Item 1: There is only one motor in the transmission, because there is an electromagnetic servo that moves the gear the motor turns from one side of the plastic transmission to the other, and each side turns a string that either controls the side-to-side or up and down movement of the mirror. Kind of an elegant design, but a nightmare to try and piece back together without instructions! If anyone has any advice or pictures, please share, as I do not want to have to spend $200+ for a part when I have the parts to put it back togher. Item 2: Rotating the mirror in and out from the body (i.e. folding it) can gradually loosen it from the mount. I am actually luck a found this in the garage, because the next bump would have sent the mirror flying and against the door hanging by the wires. I had just "unfolded" it and I could feel the lack of tension, and then it came right off in my hands! I have since reassembled the housing with LocTite to at least slow the process. I also had to remove one of the "adjusting spacers", which I found strange, but it should give me some more thread engagement. Item 3: The Bentley manual can be dangerous. For once, I was going to actually look something up before just starting to take it apart. As I was trying to fix item 2 above, I followed the instructions from the Bentley manual to use a screwdriver to loosen a hidden locking ring to free the glass. Not sure if that is for an earlier or later car, but it is definitely not for my 82 SC. All that did was tear one of the control cables in the mechanism, so I am now desperately trying to rebuild the transmission, which is a huge pain! Turns out, the mirror glass can be carefully pulled off of the transmission (getting behind it first with some small pliers and squeezing the hollow pins holding the galss a little may make the pulling process less dramatic, and the pins can be reformed before the glass is reinstalled. If anyone has any glass or transmission spare parts lying around, I will probably need them (driver's side, heated "flag" mirror) Olivier
