Carrera fuel pump question
Here goes:
When you first twist the key in the morning to "run" (like just before you're gonna crank the engine), should you hear the fuel pump run? Also, which relay in the fuse box is the fuel pump relay? I lost my fuse box cover... -BG

Mine doesn't. The fuel pump fuse is #6, counting from the rear of the car to the front. What year is your car?
Just checked all year Carreras (84-89) are in the same location.

When I first turn on the key I usually hear the pump.

My Carrera is an 84. I had the motor out to do the clutch and a bunch of other things and replaced all my injectors. The car has been idle for 4 months, with Stabil in the gas tank. It started really hard for the first time yesterday, which I could understand as there was no gas back in the fuel rails (after changing injectors and replating the rails.) The car finally fired and ran o.k., but I shut it off after 5 minutes to do something else. Came back 10 later, cranked and cranked and cranked and finally fired, popping, pooping, etc... Step on the gas and real muddy feeling, engine didn't want to increase rpm. Finally died. No restart. Thinking fuel pump dead as a fluke, or air vane box flapper is stuck. All other sensors check out, except I'm not sure how to check crank ref. sensor or timing sens. New plugs, dist cap, rotor, wires good, new fuel filter 300 mi. ago, thinking pump...tips on how to check appreciated.

BG maybe it,s a dirty filter in the gastank itself. Is it maybe on reserve fuel ? try and fill another 10 liters of gas in it and try again. I had exact same problem and it was a dirty filter from the reserve gastank.

Its a simple test to confirm fuel pump dead or alive. - Ignition off for these tests - Connect a jumper wire to Fuse 16 in the truck fuse panel - Touch the jumper to Fuse 17 in the panel. The fuel pump should run. - remove the DME relay - jumper pins 30 and 87b - pump should run Ignition On - DME relay pin 86 should have battery voltage - DME relay pin 30 should have battery voltage - DME relay pin 85 should have ground If all these tests are good, the pump and pump control relays are good.

Thanks. I'll give the test a whirl. I have replaced the filter in the tank itself when I reconditioned the tank exterior last fall. I have almost a full tank of gas...

The DME "relay" is really 2 relays in one; fuel pump and DME relay. It's under the drivers seat.

BG,
Is it possible you connected the speed and reference sensor to the wrong terminals? They are marked with tape collars. DG= Speed sensor and BG= Reference sensor. Just a thought. To check these sensors, check the resistance between the sensor terminals. Counting pins from top to bottom... 1 and 2 = 960 ohms +/- 96 1 and 3 = > 100,000 ohms 2 and 3 = > 100,000 ohms

Chris:
Confused..??? Shouldn't there be a safety aspect that prevents the fuel pump from runningf when the ignition switch is "on" ...but the engine is not running ?? I believe the fuel pump shouldn't run unless rpm's are sensed....no? ---Wil Ferch

Will,
In the DME cars, the pump does not run until the key is turned to Start. The DME logic seems to be Start OR Revs = Pump Enabled.

APKhaos:
OK...so when against the spring loaded "start" positon, ... the fuel pump runs. So how does Chris B hear the pump? When I start, I hear a lot of engine "turning" noises...or an immediate firing up of the engine. --Wil Ferch

When I hot wire my fuel pump it runs. When my key goes to run, I hear nothing. When my key goes to start, the pump runs.
Now if I could just get spark... ![]()

I just went and checked and you're right, the fuel pump doesn't run when I turn the key. I wonder what I was thinking...
