What a beautiful car the 959 is. The lines just flow together.
Who's was it?

959's are awesome machines, but I actually prefer the lines of a regular 911, so in this group I think I have to vote for the old Ferrari and BMW and I have always liked the big healeys and what's that one, a McLaren, that's another amazing machine.

I'm sure the silver Bugatti is fast as hell, but I think it looks goofy. It's hard to argue with the McClaren, though!

I prefer the lines of a regular 911 too.. the 959 looks like a regular 911 that's been subsumed by some sort of racing drapery. Still, I'd sure love to take it for a spin.

I think the Ferrari is a 250 GT Lusso? Gorgeous.

Bob, Cant say who the owner was of the 959 as it was for sale and the owners rep wasnt saying. $454,000.00 though if your interested.
Yes the Ferrari 250 GT Lusso was a crowd pleaser.
The first pic was one of my favorites, '63 Jaguar-Kougher Roadster.
Lots of incredible cars, all the way from early Morgans to the Bugati. All locally owned. These guys pull them out of their garages to support a local charity. Happens once a year about this time. I ended up with about 120 digital pictures of the 75 or so cars there.

Dan:

I knew there was a reason I liked Santa Barbara so much!! Its a little bit of the Mediterranean in California - and with exotic/historical cars to boot!

Is there a website for this event for next years schedule? I'd be willing to come down just for the chance to visit SB again - I'll check out the cars and my wife can shop on State Street and/or Solvang!

What was that magazine article that compared a 959 with a stock 964 or 993 and concluded that the stock car had made it to the level of the 959? It took a decade or two for production cars to reach the 959 level but I can't remember which version of the "911" it was...

Wait a while and the nuevo Boxster will be at the C-GT level...

ya I apreciate the 959 technology but I never liked the looks as much as a period 911. That McLaren gets me hot, i think the heat insulation in the engine compartment is worth more than my whole car, I think the muffler is worth more than my house, tough to enjoy it but man!!!!

All these cars are special. The lines on the Healey are especially sweet to me. My father had the first of the big healey's a '58 100-6. This one here I believe is small (4cyl) healey. A 100M or S model mostlikely.

I had the pleasure of meeting Donald Healey during an event in 1981 or 1982. It was at a Conclave Austin Healey Club of America meet in West Virginia. We were at the hotel having breakfast and my father told me to walk over to the older gentleman sitting alone across the room and ask him to sign my shirt. He did! I was 11 or 12 at the time and still have it somewhere.

Thanks for the pictures!

About 4 years ago Autoweek siad the muffler was $16,000. McClaren did the service at thier factory. They picked up the customer's car and shipped it to England by air and flew it back. That ought to run up the price of an oil change.

Of all the cars I have owned the pictures remind me that my 1954 Austin Healey is the one I wish I had kept. I traded a baby blue 1958 Alfa Romeo Guiletta with a high school buddy for his red 1954 Healey that I had helped him fix up (this was in 1965 before we called it restoration). With the windscreen slid down and an open exhaust this was one hot car back then and continues to be one today.

I've never cared for the looks of the 959. I saw several of them at the Porsche factory while there in the 80's and thought they looked kit carish then and to me they still do. I really like the Healey and the bimmer.

That 959 has to be the same one that we saw in Monterey two weeks ago, there couldn't be TWO Guard's Red street legal cars running around, right(?) It was parked at Laguna Seca during R-gruppe picnic and PCA track event, then saw it screaming by on street later. It was owned by a well known car guy, forgot his name, famous for customising Suburbans and the like. Maybe Bruce Canapa(?) Anyways......., we saw one at a dealer in West Hollywood a couple of months ago for $235k, a little closer to reality IMO. The red one is beautiful if you like 959s, though.

Tom, I dont know if there is a website for this event. Ill check and email you if there is.
Denis, Your right on with the 959. Mr Canepa had a H2, Excursion and a Denali (all custom done by his shop) there besides the 959. All were for sale. To bad I forgot my checkbook.

Re: Bruce Canepa and his 959's.

I talked to Bruce at R Gruppe. He told me he has either 12 or 14 959's in his shop (must be nice!) for Federalizing and turbo/handling upgrades and all of them are spoken for and sold at approx $425-450K each. He buys low mileage examples mostly from Japan. He said the European ones usually were in worse shape because of the winters.

Problem is, you can't drive them as often as you would like as there is a fairly new law he was exporting them under that really limited the annual mileage you could put on the car.

One of the classic car mags has a comparision between a Ferrari 288 GTO and a 959. Pretty interesting read.

If I can afford one, I would have a hard time deciding between the two.

The lines on that 507 are beautiful -- especially considering the age.
