Mechanical fuel injection resource index

I've decided to try to update and make the MFI Message Board Index easier to use until the Pelican wiki is functioning. The separate posts are so that I have room to add additional links later. Please let me know what you think about this new format and if you find any links that do not work. Thanks.

Finally getting around to CMA on my MFI. Long thread discussing the value of thoroughly following CMA on MFI vehicles. Look especially at threads by Grady Clay and John Cramer.

Cold start:

Cold Start Solenoid problems. Discusses cold start solenoid problems on pre-1970 MFI 911's.

MFI, 1972 warm-up issues (combined). Long thread which also contains lots of information about the MFI thermostat, miscellaneous cold start issues and having patience with the MFI system.

MFI Cold Start Problems by Robert C. Spindel. Explains the operation of the cold start solenoid.

Cold Start-up routine MFI. This thread discusses the start-up routine for MFI cars. “With everything working properly the best sequence is: Pull on the properly adjusted hand throttle. Turn the key to “on” (not “crank”) for 1-3 seconds to clear any bubbles from the fuel circuit. Crank to start. When it fires give a quick rap to 3-4000 or so to clear out unburned fuel from the cold start. Drive it immediately.”

Correlation:

Using Protractors for correlation discusses how to use MFI protractors for correlation and why following CMA is so important.

MFI air/fuel set-up. Setting the air fuel mixture as part of the correlation process. Documents showing that protractors are not absolutely necessary for final correlation.

Clogged Fuel Pump/Pickup:

MFI / CMA revisited ... The fuel tank should be drained and removed [remove the fine bronze filter screen at the outlet fitting] ... and cleaned & sealed with a slosh/seal product such as what is commonly used for light aircraft fuel tanks. Blow out the fuel line in the tunnel with compressed air ... to see if any rust particles are still clogging the fuel flow! Replacement of the line may be necessary to achieve the specified fuel output of 900 cc - 1000 cc in 30 seconds!

Mixture Adjustment:

MFI Mixture Control. Good advice about setting pump mixture like: "Remember the phrase "I Lean Left" for "idle screw lean to the left-- and then remember that the main rack is the opposite of the idle rack, so the main rack is lean right, rich left" and "Everyone you talk to will stress the LAST thing you do is adjust the mixture ... All this does is to get you farther from a solution and many times causes more problems.

David, is there any interest in reproducing the P228b and P228c protractors? Believe it or not, I just bought a complete set of NOS protractors (they even came in the original Porsche parts boxes) from a retiring Porsche mechanic. After looking over the protractors, it seems that it would be possible to make a set without too much difficulty. Just curious as to whether there would be any interest in reproducing these tools.

After looking over the protractors, it seems that it would be possible to make a set without too much difficulty. Just curious as to whether there would be any interest in reproducing these tools.

One of the long time members Milt AKA Zeke undertook this project several years ago but abandoned the effort after concluding the it was not feasable. Here is his latest thread on why he abandoned the effort (post # 5). I'm sure there would be interest if you could figure a way to make these accuartely and at a reasonable cost. Since Porsche concluded that the protractors were not necessary way back in 1972 (post # 32), I don't think anyone would be willing to pay more than a couple of hundred dollars max for copies. Just my 2¢.

P.S. Are you the guy that bought the NOS set that sold on eBay in the last few weeks?

Yes I am and I did. I also found a separate set of the earlier 2.2 protractors from a retiring Porsche mechanic. They too, did not sell for anywhere NEAR the prices asked.

Heads-up - I've tried to download the CMA guide a few times this week, and the link appears to be dead.

Thanks. For some reason I've lost my ability to edit that post. I'll send an email to a moderator to see if he/she can fix this. For now, here is a link from the early 911S registry to the CMA manual.

I still can't edit this thread. The link posted in #15, right above yours, is working!
