I did some research on reinforcing rear dumper towers (or whatever these are called). Sorry not a native speaker here.

These seems to be a good idea in general, but I think these are either to fragile, or two hardcore if not building a race car.

I will certainly not weld roll bar / full cage, so will need to figure out something in-between.

I like the idea of the strut brace between rear struts.

konrad911 01-29-2022 03:25 AM

Talked to my metal-arts-friend, and according to him lot of cracks that happened near the corners (as marked in photos) are due to continuous welds that stress the metal sheets to much and these break close to the weld.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1643458941.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1643458941.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1643458941.jpg

So even though these seem to be in general good idea, the way these are applied / welded could be better.

The triangles welded in corners here are good thing, but would work better if not welded with continuous weld as in photo below.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1643459056.JPG

I did a search what is available in the web as reinforcement kits for 911, and decided that with help of my friend we will try to design/develop something that is much better and still not that much expensive.

I will post later what we will come up with.

Flojo 02-03-2022 12:28 AM

don't over do it

konrad911 02-03-2022 12:59 AM

Prototyping from thin metal sheets...

The idea is to make a "kit" that could be easily add-on-welded. Piece by piece for good accessibility for welding and giving a strong reinforcement when fully welded in.

I agree, but anyway I will try to do a dual spark plug conversion for my engine, while rebuilding it, so I hope I will not need to change the plugs for a long time :D

Had to change spark plugs in my friend's 993, OMG I wish I had the engine out :D But for 993 it's a much more effort to drop the engine than with 964 and 911.

konrad911 11-04-2022 02:23 PM

Yeah, so I owe you an update right?
Been super busy and it's just a week away for me to become a father of a 2nd son - keep fingers crossed all goes fine. Obviously other things kept me away from my 911 works, but I have the bodywork part finished now.

The thing is both me and my friend that was doing the body works did not expect what we found out. Neither we expected the sick prices for some of the panels. i.e. I asked in Europe for new front wings - these were like USD 1500 Each :-/
So most of the panels were repaired by my friend or built from a sheet of metal from scratch.

konrad911 11-04-2022 02:39 PM

And I decided to build a few additional sets of reinforcements for the G-model.

If anyone interested, please PM me. There will come a time I will just list them on eBay, but why cover their fees...

1- holy cow that’s a LOT of body filler!

2- those reinforcements are beautiful.

3- I cannot wait to see where this goes!

Yeah, I tried to make them not only do the job properly, but also to have a "light" look, that would not be catching the eye that much.
I'm happy with the result, to me it looks like it was a factory upgrade or so.

Rear strut brace is 3mm steel and can be easily added together with the shock towers reinforcements.

Although I plan to keep the torsion bars I decided to do a proper reinforcement at this stage, as later it would mean additional paint works. Who knows when I'll get an idea to use coilovers :D

In general I was aiming for simplicity and good improvement in reinforcing the construction to accept coilovers. I still plan to do some small reinforcements near the mounting points of the chassis (like close boxing mounts etc.). Time will tell.

I'sure these will look much much better when painted red as the rest of the car :D

Great work but...how did that get so rusted out...parked in a salt water garage?

I have an '83 with zero rust anywhere... I do live in a dry climate but that is extreme.

konrad911 11-06-2022 08:12 AM

When I'm looking over the thread to check what photos I already posted... It was tough :D
Fortunately that's done. Now (or rather a bit later) the remaining works... And plan is also ambitious

Indeed, great work, but as you asked, how can a ‘83 galvanized body get to be this rusty. Kudos to the Konrad for his persistence and great workmanship.

Konrad, you may want to consider reinforcing the rear torsion bar pickup as follows…

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1667825876.jpg

Those pieces are readily available but with your skills, I’m sure you cam cut them out yourself.
Cheers,
Johan

I have no idea, but its darn rusty, well... was :)

Kudos go to my friend that was doing the metal works. I just made him think more with mi reinforcement ideas. The other thing he mentioned, that in general the 911 body is REALLY solid in terms of welds, joins and number of sheets of metal that combine into single part. According to his wisdom only Mercedes had that good connections and number of spot welds etc. but Mercedes is far behind that.

I did and I do consider these. It's a simple add-on. Not sure I need this though, my metal works friend said it makes no sense unless I'm heavily racing with a seriously stiff suspension.

But I'm open to listen to any good arguments.

Some time ago I did search for the RSR reinforcements that factory used, but I don't recall these plates there. Maybe my memory is not that good though :-)

konrad911 11-08-2022 01:04 PM

So just to prepare you for another longer break. The majority of the bodyworks is finished. All the welds and surroundings were sandblasted after the works and covered with wash primer and epoxy primer. Also upside down and on either of the sides, so this would get into those tiny holes in-between the sheets of metal.
