The Ernst Benz timer arrived today - very impressive quality. Feels like you could drive nails with it in an emergency ..... even has an optional 12V light to wire into the dash lighting. Hopefully, will have time to mount it this week. Will post photos - of course - of finished installation.

The Benz chronograph is very attractive from the photos. Please post pics of your install. Where are you planning to mount it?
A weird thought - could it be made to fit where the existing clock goes, maybe protruding a bit? Would be neat to see people do a double-take . . . |
John, it's going to go on the left side of the glovebox door. The mounting plate is 2.25 inches square and fits perfectly between the 2 trim strips. I do like your idea of mounting it in the clock location. I guess you could put a blank plate in there and mount the timer to that.

Installed the dash timer today .....

Looks great.
Going to get rid of the stock clock now? |
Thanks. Not sure about the clock. Don't want to put a blank in there. If I could think of something to replace it with I would.
|
Very nice Curt. Did drilling into the door give you pause?
|
wow! that is sharp. Is that simular to Steve's?
James |
that last photo you posted looks great. much more robust looking than on the website. it takes a power source to light it up. how about the source to operate it? is it also from the car or does it have its own battery already inside?
|
James - I don't remember Steve having a dash timer?? Maybe he'll chime in here ....
Jim - wasn't too bad drilling - I figure I can always cover it with a new piece of red leather if I ever wanted to remove it (and the inside is covered with trim.) As for the lighting, there's a 12V bulb that snaps into the back of the timer. Another hole would need to be drilled thru the glovebox door to accomodate it. Then there's a wire that would need to be spliced into a dash lighting circuit. I didn't install the light yet. -- Curt |
Curt, if one did mount the timer in the stock clock hole (perhaps using a blank plate) would there be enough room at the top to operate the buttons? Can you eyeball it?
|
John, it looks like it would fit in the clock location just about perfectly. I don't think the 2.25" square mounting plate will fit within the standard clock bezel, but it should work good on a flat blank plate. It protrudes far enough that the buttons will be accessible. -- Curt

On The Dash has updated their site including a page with original installations. The bottom photo is of a 1969 Factory 911 Rally Car.

Curt,
Great interior shots!!! Its tough keeping up with you.;) Thanks for the info. |
hahaha! Well, if you're trying to keep up Ray, get a double timer .... cause that's what's probably next for me. The Ernst Benz single is nice, but it's one of those little details that's always bugging me - I really NEED a double/triple timer. So, I'm sure - eventually - I'll have one. ;)

Hi guys,
ebay now, with interesting video attached, good documentary photos. Yes, this is my sale, I bought it many years ago for a vintage Porsche, never installed it. I don't recomment buying this as the price is high and it will sell anyway. I post this as a point of information for any future price comparison or photo documentation. http://i.ebayimg.com/t/HEUER-MONTE-C...TRR7w~~0_3.JPG Best, P |
Did anyone ever find a source for these?

Special Thanks to Chris and his great work. This face will fit and replace the original clock face, of 911 641 701 29 and 911 641 701 00 fitted on cars from 1965-1989. Its not the Singer stuff but it works for me. Subdials don't work but its also the case on the Singer one. Contact him directly in case you want one.
