Found this 'everything-you-need-to-know' website on the awesome Heuer Rally Timers from the 1960/70's :

Wish I had kept a few hundred of these from the 60's and 70's... did not know that they would turn into gold later on!

I have never been one for Tags. But these I like.

jriera 05-19-2003 06:25 AM

Pure eye candy.... from way before TAG put Heuer in the mainstream.

The 24 hours Autavia has to be my preferred one..

I love the look, but after the 911R wheels the budget was shot....so I went the cheepo route (they are Heuers...).

cool site Curt.

Heuer was something else befor TAG got involved. I remember getting a Heuer Chronograph for my 15th birthday, it was the masterpiece in my class. Sadly it didn't survive me growing up :(

cegerer 05-19-2003 01:48 PM

Yeah, the prices on these are becoming astronomical! There's got to be several dozen boxes of NOS timers sitting in a warehouse someplace - just a matter of finding them .... ;) -- Curt

Found a US source for the German-made Sinn Rallye Timers - $1490US. These are brand new and look fantastic.

Also, if you're into German watches, check the Muhle, Limes and MeisterSinger lines on watchbuys.com - some really nice stuff! -- Curt

Also, check this new page on onthedash.com dedicated to Steve McQueen :

www.watchbuys.com is a nice site! When I need more "compensation" I'm getting a multi-thousand-dollar watch :-)

Seriously, can anyone explain to me what the "tachymeter" scales around some of the chronograph-type watches are used for?

cegerer 07-12-2003 04:24 PM

The Tachymeter scale is a way to determine speed bsaed upon elapsed time. It usually reads in kilometres per hour based on time for a 1000 meters distance. -- Curt

Sure wish I hadn't tossed my old master time....but the local jeweler couldn't fix it's broken mainsping, and I was too dumb in the late 70's to think it was worth fixing. After all, I paid less than $100 for it, new...

Curt, here's a site with some nice rally equipment: www.halde.de Among other things, they have a russian (Soviet) timepiece that I'm thinking about getting, at least till I can afford a Heur set... :)

cegerer 07-15-2003 07:00 AM

Evren, is that the correct URL. I get a website, but nothing to click on??? Thanks. -- Curt

BTW: I tried http://www.helda.de/ - now there's a strange little website!

evren 07-15-2003 07:08 AM

oops! sorry about that -- should be www.halda.de, as in HALDA, the 50/60s Swedish rally tripmeter manufacturer...

cegerer 02-19-2004 04:19 PM

Finally found a reasonably priced and good looking dashboard timer!! Just couldn't justify 4 digits for an original Heuer ...... these are made by Ernst Benz. ETA Swiss movement (OK, it's quartz, not mechanical .... can't have everything ....)

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1077236176.jpg

Now the good part: I've found these listed at $695 on several websites.

http://www.princetonwatches.com/shop/GC9000.asp

But Spruce Aircraft has got them for only $275??!! Pretty sure it's the same piece. Mine is on the way and should be here in a day or 2. :)

Have seen some on Ebay from time to time but they are still rare... should have saved the ones I had in the 70's!

Just FYI, TAG (Techniques AvantGuard) is a design house. It acquired Heuer, a fine old Swiss house in the 80's when no one wanted mech timepieces after the Japanese quartz reveloution. TAG Heuer is a totally outsourced brand that sells massively overpriced, until recently quartz, watches to people who know no better and hang around malls. Heuer, pre TAG, is the real deal. Sinn was until recently run by old Helmut Sinn, a WW2 Luftwaffe pilot, and that firm makes great, but hard to get outisde of Euorope, stuff. I had a Sinn chrono that was stark black, white and orange- it could have been a sister instrument to the VDOs in my 911.

cheers stuart (and ap;olgies to any TAG owners- I have one too)

pwd72s 02-19-2004 06:11 PM

I was into TSD rallying during the mid 60's...believe me, we'd have tossed our Heuers in a second for a more reliable quartz timepiece. I knew one couple crazy enough to listen to WWV thru an entire rally in order to be "perfect" on time. That would have driven me batty pronto...

masraum 02-19-2004 06:38 PM

Cool, lately I have been scouring the web looking at info on old Heuer watches (I liked the look, didn't know they were better and the new TH watches were overpriced), I have also been looking at the old Heuer Rally Timers. Very cool, I would love to have one of the dual setups as a desk piece/conversation piece, but I can't even begin to afford them.

I also had no Idea what a tachymeter was until a couple of weeks ago.

Here is a link with definitions for other watch stuff, tachymeter, telemeter, pulsometer, chronograph, and chronometer (I didn't realize this required certification)
